I would say 87% of ppl and some shops set gains by ear.... If your going to spend the $$ on car audio no matter if it's a $277 set up or a $2k + system.. Atleast do it right! Will sound better and last a lot LONGER!! Overall you will be more than happy with a well tuned system as opposed to one thrown together
 
I've always tuned by ear and never honestly had a problem. When you know what your doing you can tune it by ear. Bestbuy, American, and the other places like that don't know what they are doing most of the time.
