Power Steering Pump Going Bye Bye?

Modded for Maximum Slow
Okay so here's the deal. I have a 2000 GP GT and the other day I noticed a whiring noise while I was turning. Not bad at first but noticeable. Car has 157,000 on it. The thing is that I had the Rack and Pinion and Power Steering Pump replace about a year ago. When I drive the car I have noticed whe I stop and pop the hood there is smoke coming from the left front from under the engine. Thought it was coolant at first but got all that stuff replaced and level has always been perfect. I'm hoping it is something simple and not a big issue. Any thoughts? And I'm currently headed to Toledo, OH for an engineering competition deal so I might not get around to reponding or be able to check the car out any better.

The smoke could be trans fluid. As far as the power steering goes, you probably have some air in the power steering system. Just went through this on an 02 Imp. Jack the front end up so both tires are off the ground and turn it lock to lock 10 times w/ the motor running. Drop it back down and check the PS level. If low, top it off. If not, then take it for a drive and see if the whine is less or gone. If not, then repeat the process again.

I had a leaking return line on the Imp and it took 5 cycles of this to work the air out of the system and shut the pump up. Now it's quiet as a mouse.

Did you ever find out if this took care of the problem? My 2000 GT is making a similar noise too, but my power steering level is full. I have steam/smoke for a few seconds come out near the passenger headlight after I shut the car off.

Not yet. I tried suggested method and it still makes noise. Sounds like you and I have a similar problem with smoke and all. I had the tranny replaced about 2 years ago now and dont think that is the issue. It seems fine. My dad is going to speak to the mechanic today and he might take a look at it this weekend.

You need to look for coolant leaks or a trans line leaking at the radiator. Steam from the pass. headlight would suggest a leaking radiator to me. They are known to leak where the plastic side tank is crimped to the aluminum core. Often they only leak after shutdown when the pressure build up a bit.

So I found out the hard way what my problem was. My baby snapped its serpentine belt on the freeway and had to pull over. After getting it into the shop, it was the Tensioner Stabilizer that ceased on me. And so now, she is in surgury all day today, but good news is that Im having the LIM gaskets replaced too. May as well while Im getting the tensioner fixed.
