Power Door Locks not working

Just wondering if anyone has any experience changing out door locks on a 2 door. I have one that has gone bad and I can to everything except the rod that goes from the lock to the tumblers in the door. I dont want to break it trying to get it apart, but per the GMSI manuals, it says to cut it off, and replace it with a new one.....isnt there a better way. Has anyone ever replaced the door locks?

FYI this is the actual lock, not the switches in the door...hehe
