The adative in propane that makes the smell is Mercaptan. It's the same scent added to natural gas just in different quantities :)

I was filling a fork lift tank at work for a customer and had the bleeder valve open. Went to shut it after it was full like I do every other time, but today it got me and it got me good.
It's still kinda touchy in the area but appears to be ok.
I've been filling tanks for almost 7 years and I can say that this is the first time I remember burning myself that bad.
I was tough tho and didn't let the customer know that on the inside I was screaming every obscenity that came to mind.

And yes, that stuff stinks awful. I hate smelling like it after I fill a motor home cuz the fumes just overtake your clothes. Icky stuff.
