So I'm trying to design up an idea for a cam lamp. So far this is a rough sketch of my design its crude and not very pretty but I'd be proud of it. Because 3800 cams aren't hollow it makes it hard to cleanly route the wires unless i took it to like a machine shop and see if they can bore it out and hope it doesn't break or something. The on/off switch is optional at this point, it would work good with the rotor because i would have room to wire it. With the wood base i wouldn't have room.
So for the base of this project im torn between a wood base or using an old brake rotor i have but its so damn heavy so im not sure yet. I would find a bolt that threads into the cam then get washers and some bolts cut a circular peice of wood out to go into the hat of the rotor. I would bolt the cam to the wood base then the wood base to the rotor using lug nuts with them facing up kinda like this. Then for the cord i would either let it dangle or get some sort of piping to run from the socket to the base of the lamp into one of the lug bores into the base and maybe add a switch in one of the other lug bores to.
For the wood base it would be simplier and far less heavy. Just bolt the cam to the wood base and add some feet on each corner and let the wire dangle or add a piping to put the wires in like the rotor design but won't have a switch on the base only on the socket.
Haven't figured out socket mouting yet but I forsee lots of jb weld lol.

Lamp is a ***** project. LOL You should go all out like my buddy Greg did and make a coffee table from a block.
Another guy, Taj, made a table out of two rotors and cranks. His isn't done as nicely as Greg's, but most of that probably has to do with the resources Greg had at his disposal when he did his.

Gut an old lamp. Get creative on the shade, more auto parts.... headlight, tail? Spins on a hub? Use fuel line as wire conduit up backside o bumpstick? Put "the clapper" on it just fer trix?
Use rotor not wood. Drum would work too. I'm actively huntin my L6OHC cam now, to be tallest lamp beotch. Axles would be easy to use also, just bolt drum or rotor on backwards.
I have an abundance of carb air cleaners that could be used in making a shade. And two Pontiac 400 blocks that could be something too. Maybe BBQ grills. Prolly have enough heads and tin to make two dummy Ponch V8s or close to it. And some old ladder bars for legs. Thinking of making a run stand for the 72 400 out of the 02 subframe lol. Wall-mounted tailgates as garage benches are another idea I like.
Sounds like a great way to goof away a nice afternoon. Now these rotating avatar insults, Russo... maybe you need to hunt up a can of spinach and corncob pipe then go fix that somehow.

Well the avatar is because I haven't seen band of brothers and I was told it will be changed everyday till i watch it.
Good thinking on the fuel line, I was thinking like braided line after you said it. Cost is the only thing I wonder. I painted the rotor black but i might change it up not sure yet. It's one of those things I can think about when bored at work. If i did a hard line i actually thought it might look cleaner if i put the pipe close up against cam so its harder to see.

Yeah, i guess band of brothers is a big deal, I've watched some of it a while ago when I was in Canada visiting my now ex gf. It seemed interesting just never finished it.

Some temp mockup, I need to pickup some washers so the cam sits more level and bolts for the lug nuts because im not paying 3 each for grade 8 bolts when i don't need them to be grade 8 lol. Probably going to give this to my dad when I buy him a mini fridge for fathers day because he doesn't have a fridge at the moment.
