possible turbo build

I have a friend who has some mad fabrication skills, and we discussed putting together a turbo setup. he said he would start with 2 front oem manifolds, and modify one of them to use on the rear. he also said if I left my car at his place for a couple weeks he would do the whole install, to make sure the fit and finish was good. we are planning on doing a T3 61MM turbo. the site I am looking at ordering from is www.on3performance.com, and the guy doing the fab work and installation will vouch for them. so far all the parts I have in my shopping car total about 750, and include the turbo, wastegate, blow off valve and turbo blanket.

my current setup is an xp cam with ported heads, 90 lb ls6 springs, and a phenolic air to water intercooler. I'm planning on keeping the air to water intercooler, but I will open up a supercharger case for more airflow.

I am planning on installing 130 lb valve springs, and a double roller timing chain. one thing I am wondering is that since I am already going to have the harmonic balancer off, and am going to a turbo setup, is there a good naturally aspirated harmonic balancer that I could use?

Yesterday it was drilled rotors, today turbo....tomorrow you'll be twin charging. Yeah, I'd put that trans at the top of your list for sure.
 
already done the transmission. I have a dynotech, with a dynotech 300m input shaft and a dynotech 7/8's chain. it has been running hotter than normal, so I'm probably going to drop the oil pan and check the fluid and filter. I changed the fluid one time already, but its still getting hotter than normal, so hopefully I didn't burn up some clutches, or whatever is causing the higher temps.

I have a hard time sticking to one idea, I end up changing my mind more times than I care to admit.

one thing I was wondering is if the T3 61 mm turbo is going to be a good match for a 3800 with an xp cam.

edit: question answered: we talked about doing a T4 because it would give more room for more power, but the input shaft I have is probably only good for 375 hp, and I would rather not drop the transmission for a repair. the T3 will be close to maxed out, but will spool up very fast.
 
T4 67 or 70 IMHO. But I like big turbos. Brake boost and they will take you to the moon. And I'm sorry but that wimpy 7/8 is going to stretch like a rubber band with powaaa

hes gonna start with 2 front OEM cast mainfolds??? the most restrictive part of the stock exhaust??? sounds like a quality plan to me...

I am friends with GOJO83, but he is not the person doing the work. I am aware of the restriction, and thought the heat and pressure would be better to get the turbo spooled up faster.

EDIT: if you do use a t3 61mm turbo it wont have any issues with spooling...its not exactly a monster

honestly if you dont have a want for more then 400hp i would just run both stock front and rear manifolds. but i certainly wouldnt **** with making a rear out of a stock front mani. thats just counter productive...

if and when you want more...build/buy tubular manifolds

Ok, even bough I'm sure I'll get bashed as dissuading you. That said, I highly suggest you take a step back, do some research and decide in exactly what you want to do, where you want to take your engine/car. It's apparent you really aren't sure and was my point in other posts. You think your Dynotech tranny build is up to the task of a turbo powered 3800? I can assure you if you don't have $3500+++ invested in it, I doubt it. But there are lots of knowledgable people here who've done turbo builds, pick their brains, get lots of info., make a plan, then maybe then, start getting your stuff together. Then contact your buddy about assembly : )

I'm not real sure if my dynotech will hold up. Nobody really runs them anymore, but the person I got it from used it on their turbo 3800, I think it was an Impala, but I can't remember for sure. It was Swiggles transmission. the only thing different is that it has a dynotech 300m input shaft and a dynotech 7/8's chain with a zzp 2500 stall converter.

as far as making a plan, my plan is to do the small turbo build, and then leave it alone. if the transmission goes out, I'll rebuild it as necessary. the car isn't a daily driver anymore, so if it breaks, its not a big deal. I don't want to do some crazy hp build, I just want a little bit more power. If I feel like I want more power, I will buy a 4th gen Camaro or a 5.3 half ton Chevy. I understand the limitations of a front wheel drive car. I think this plan is pretty reasonable.

Personally I think a smaller turbo is the way to go. Most of the big power builds I see happen tear themselves apart leading to a partout shortly after. That is if you are not wanting to dump a ton of money into a transmission. I have the same dynotec input shaft along with a 7/8 chain. I am probably running 350-375 whp. So far so good with 45 or so track passes and lots of tearing up the streets. As you said if it breaks I will grab another $75 junkyard trans and swap over hard parts.

It is plenty fast to be fun and seems to make passes pretty close to a lot of guys running t4, big cam, etc. Not trying to step on any toes but if you like driving and enjoying you car instead of wrenching on it all the time it seems like a good option. Just my 2cents.
