Good read Bill. Although i must be honest i dont quite get all of it. I tend to learn easier when i have someone pointing out the part and tells me how it works or what its purpose is. Pictures are really good too,like the ones Bill posted on this thread. All i know it sounded like DARTH VADER was under my hood as it was dying out. Like the car was having an asthma attack. Hopefully the mechanic will be here in the next hour or so.
 
that vader noise was the IAC (idle air control) trying to keep it running and you likely have a cold air intake on it ...which makes it a ton louder.

The basis behind that EGR code is that the EGR is being commanded open to test that it'll open. During that test exhaust gases (Exhaust gas recirculation) are allowed into the intake tract to be reburned and help fuel mileage. When this happens the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor should see an change in pressure based on teh added exhaust gasses. If it doesn't the pcm tosses P0401 at you.

Now .. you may think it's an EGR issue. Let's think further though. There's an EGR pintle (the valve that opens) valve code, hwere the pcm can tell if the valve opened as commanded. There's a codes for general BS with the EGR and other oddities. Since you aren't getting any codes telling you the EGR didn't open. Then you may want to check it...but if the pintle moves freely, then likely your map sensor can't see the change in pressure. sooo if you are supercharged, check the vacuum line to the map sensor and if you aren't...take a look at the connection/sensor itself.
 
I appreciate all your advice and knowledge Bill. Since i am a noob with very limited knowledge please excuse my next question. Since i do get a 401 code is that telling me that my MAP sensor is the issue or at least the connection. Is the MAP sensor near the air intake? I have the stock air intake.
 
It's tough for me to give you a picture w/o knowing which engine you have. What year and model do you drive?
The map sensor is behind the supercharger or on the passenger end of the black/aluminum upper intake on the non charged engine.

What I'm saying is.. be informed. Know what possible things are in play and you/the mechanic will look at things and diagnose them quicker. For example if you print out that code from Gearchatter, first...he'll probably be impressed that you have the factory manual page. Secondly..he'll see that w/o other EGR codes...this is possibly a map issue.
