1993 grandprix: Last week 3 or 4 times while i was on highway my car died. I would put it in neutral and start it back upand it would continue to run just fine until today i go out to start it and it wont start. Ive checked fuel filter and fuel pump and i think they are ok. thanks 4 your help.

Many possibilities. You'll have to narrow some of them down by whether you're getting spark, or not. If there's no spark, it could be the crank position sensor, 1 or more ignition coils or the ignition control module. If it's getting spark, then it has to be a fueling problem. Could be 1 or more injectors, or the fuel pressure regulator leaking. BTW, how did you test the fuel filter? It's only around $10 for a replacement one, and technically, they should be replaced once a year, so you may as well do that. How did you test the fuel pump?

Also, what is it doing when you try to start it? Just cranking, but won't turn over? Is it struggling to crank at all? If you have the vaults gauge on the car, is it showing adequate amps to start the car (around 11)?

thank you for responding raregmfanwhen i tested the fuel pump and filter i just undid the lines under the car to see how well it was pumping thru filter.I dont have a guage but it was pumping the gas thru there pretty good. When i try to start it it turns over with no problem just not getting gas.If it was originally dying on me when it was running doesnt that eliminate the ignition coil and ignition control module.also, ive replaced the crank position sensor and it would work when the car was cool but not when hot before i replaced it. That was about a year ago. Thanks 4 your help.

sounds like a problem i'm having with a 95 monte carlo, has a 3.1l and just stalls for no reason will always start back up, i've replaced everything i can think of pcm, both crank sensors, map sensor ignition module, pcm it's not a fuel issue pressure testor holds all the time. Honestlly i gave up on the car. It's a oop (out of province car) so it's rusty i suspect a partially rotten wire somewhere. my fix i bought a new car....lol

does it sound like its backfiring? or is there a popping sound in the intake? because thats what my 91 3.1 mpfi did until it stopped running. it stalled one day when it got to operating temp and wouldnt refire then the next day when it was cool it fired right up. until it finally just wouldnt start anymore and it sounded like it was backfiring. check for black soot in your air filter. Edit: i replaced everything that monzaman mentioned and more until i figured out it was a twisted camshaft. so im rebuilding it right now

Had the same problem a few years ago. Tried to die while driving several times and no check engine light. After taking it to Pep Boys, they diagnosed it as the upper intake. It is plastic and is prone to cracking. Wound up costing around $800.00 to replace. Just an option.
