Please Help! 2007 GT 3800 Supercharged shut itself off while driving on hiway...

Could be possible the actual supercharger rotors broke and ended up in the engine somehow... And so it locked up that belt system.

It would have to be some freak thing for the gears to break and cause the rotors inside the case to bust apart and send chunks inside the engine.

I would say its nearly impossible for that to happen.

Its just so hard to figure out what really went down, guessing over the internet doesnt always work.

Well I will have to have it looked at tomorrow, I'll let you know. Trying to stay positive even tho I got a bad feeling. Thanks again guys for all your help...

Hey Kolton Lock, I had my GT towed to my friend's mechanic today. I had him look it over... He said it can run but cant be driven without the supercharger.
(but more than one of you guys said it could and I'm gonna go see it in the morning before he rips it apart) He had it running for awhile and the crackling/tapping noise stopped, he thought it was maybe the oil pressure was low and old oil since it was on it's way to an oil change when this all happened the oil was rather spent. but as it ran and built up pressure it went away. He thought that noise was from the linkage? Would there be any noise coming from the SC if the belt was off?

The SC wont make any noise if the belt is off, and yes it can still be ran with it off, just don't want to do for long periods of time.

If you can still spin the supercharger pulley by hand you are good there, but I still want to say its a pulley that froze up and caused the car die out and not let it restart.

you can drive the car all day with no sc belt, it will just feel like a dog big time.

the sc should spin freely, it will spin with the belt off too, as air is being sucked into it and makes it spin, its normal. there is no linkage to the sc, its spins as fast as the crank will spin it.

when you do spin it by hand, it should not make any noise.

with the belt off, engine off too. grab the sc pulley and turn it left and then right, like snap it, there should be no play, if you feel a click you need a new coupler inside the snout.

have him check the coolant too, maybe it over heated on you and thats why the engine stalled out? we still dont know why it locked up do we? make sure the pulleys all spin and that the a/c clutch is still good? seen them lock a engine up before.

Yeah a buddy of mine bought a Grand Am for like $300 with 50k miles on it they said the engine was blown, nope locked up ac clutch wouldnt let the engine start lol.

good info scotty, and no we don't know why it locked up ... I'm wondering if it had any oil in it? I will go in the morning and see wth is going on now that I feel like I could (if I had the tools) replace the coupler myself :)

Times like these I wish I would've went to Auto Mechanic school instead of getting my Chemistry degree... hmm... gnite guys thanks again.
