during my engine swap i found one of my pistons was blown to bits and made my engine lock up, has anyone ever seen this before
 


its from detonation and excess heat expanding the upper ring gap and lopping off pieces of the piston. you were knocking and beating on your car.
 
if u bend delete is all u have for exhaust mods... id get some headers asap. thats why ur piston is in pieces.
 


This one didn't lock up the motor. It was clear that it rubbed a bit along the way, but it kept on working.

I didn't count the pieces, but estimated about 1,000 or 2,000 pieces were found in the pan.

It's long gone. I do enough work that broken stuff doesn't stay around long. Not to hijack, I did crack up and nearly drop the head when I saw the entire piston completely gone and the motor was still running "decently". Kinda a loose term when it's spewing smoke and flashing a check engine light. For missing a piston completely with the fuel injector pumping fuel openly into the oil pan etc....I was impressed.

Questions like "How do you pull off a 100% destroyed piston" went through my head. There wasn't a sign of of when the head came off. The only marks in the cylinder were from the pin that should have been free floating but was frozen to the rod.
