• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Picking a career

I need to get my applications in for classes next year, and I can't decide which field I want to go in. At the moment, I'm looking into being an Electrician, CNC Machinist, or going into HVAC....I just can't do a desk job. I've always liked working with my hands and I feel like any of these would be a good choice, but maybe some of you guys can throw in some input if you're in one of those fields. Thanks!

No-no on auto mechanic...I don't mind doing some of that on my weekends but I wouldn't want it as an everyday thing....Yeah I've heard about the elevator techs making some good money but I don't think there is a big enough market for that in my area

go welding or electrician,

mechanics suck, you dedicate your life to it and friends are always hey fix my **** fo free, plus you loose ambition to play with your own stuff

is it a boring job? How's the money? I hear you get quite a bit of overtime in that field....

I really enjoyed it at first, but it got monotonous after a while for me since I'm only limited to a 3-axis CNC. I work at a custom wood door company so we end up doing some crazy stuff... but mostly simple. It all depends on what kind of a CNC machinist you want to be, what field area. Average pay for a CNC programmer is like 40k a year, again depending on what field area.

How many years of school do you want to do? Tech school or 4 year+?

EE Electrical Engineering
ME Mechanical Engineering

Currently my major is EE depending on how much I can get out of the VA benifits and the National Guard I'd love to double major in both.

Either would be great as long as you don't mind the idea of moving and me personally I'll be going after a DOD contractor.
(Department of Defense. Ex. Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, General Dynamics ect.)

I do maintenance in a production machine shop, I make more than the cnc programmers. Truthfully I work way less too. Something to consider.
