phil's build thread... back from the dead yet again

Re: phil needs help with a build

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan...your ditching it?

So what's the motor in the car now? What mods?

Re: phil needs help with a build

we'll see if anybody wants it lol. i just have a stock l36. top swap and cam might be possible, but i don't have any extra money right now. i didn't list any of the top end parts i have

Re: phil needs help with a build

Bummer dude...a high compression, cammed 3800 is fun tho...keep at it

Re: phil needs help with a build

f*ck it, i'm building it. about to order parts. what kinda machine work is needed for the ARP rod bolts? any estimates on price?

Re: phil needs help with a build

Just get new GM TTY rod bolts...I didn't mess with ARP bolts. Not really worth it IMO...ARP head studs however...yes.

Re: phil needs help with a build

i was hoping you would say that. looks like im hitting up arbogast next week. i might look into studs, but i'm on a razor tight budget right now. we'll see what happens after the quarter's over, i shoud be able to work more next quarter

how's yours running nick?

Re: phil needs help with a build

When I drive it...it runs like a raped ape for a non intercooled/non meth injected car running about 19-20* timing on a 3.0/3.1.

Had to put a 3.2" on it when the temps got under freezing here though...after about 70 it started getting a few *'s of KR.

Re: phil needs help with a build

you wanna talk about knock, we were messing around in lab yesterday and my instructor turned a distributor on an old 305 to about 25* advanced. i though for sure we were gonna blow it up. but no, just shot fireballs out the carb haha

rod and main bearings are ordered, after months and months of doing nothing with this build. rod bolts and piston rings should be next paycheck. and if i ever do my taxes. and zzp's website says not to use ARP lube on rotating components, what's up with that?

Re: phil needs help with a build

ARP lube is for torquing things.

call ARP.

then go buy some assembly lube from your local speed shop or buy some from jegs/summit or someone like that.

Re: phil needs help with a build

back from the dead... again.
105# springs, modded retainers, and viton valve seals came in the mail today. double roller should be next paycheck, and cam install kit plus head gaskets the check after that. planning on top swap with cam

more questions:
can i pull the cam out without pulling the motor?
there are three fuel lines, where do they go with the L67 rails?
is the L67 pcm a direct plug in with the L36 harness, or do i need to splice anything?
the modded retainers and valve seals get me an extra .050" clearance, do i still need to mill the valve guides?

Re: phil needs help with a build

1: yes, lower one side of subframe 6-8".

Just enough so that you can get it in/out.

2: two fuel lines, one evap line. large fuel goes to large connector, small goes to small one on rail, evap stays connected to your vent solenoid.

3: PCM will be fine as long as its from the same year ish.

97's are 97 only, 98-02 are fine, 03 are 03 only.

4: you don't need to, but you might as well considering they'll have them and be working on them.

Re: phil needs help with a build

are the bolts on the top or bottom of the car? how many? should i support the motor/trans at any point with a jackstand?

and the heads aren't at a machine shop, they're with a good friend of mine who is going to do a "custom" port lol. i trust him, i just don't think any unnecessary work should be done

Re: phil needs help with a build

For the PCM thing, Matt is partially correct. Since you have a '99 you'll be looking for a '99-'02 PCM.

The '97-'98 MAF tables are different and might skew some stuff on your end if you put it in as we had that problem with DHP's '98 file in a couple '99-'01 cars.

Re: phil needs help with a build

if i remember right, the pcm i have is from an 01. we'll see when i get to the tuning part. i'm more worried about getting the damn thing built, it's been sitting for a year now

Re: phil needs help with a build

every gasket i could imagine using got ordered today, as well as the idler pullies i needed, new coolant elbows, and rocker bolts. i'll most likely go with the single roller timing set on zzp's site, and i'll probably pick up headers next paycheck as well. i've seen a few threads on this topic and i'm assuming i'll need wiring harnesses for the bbv and MAP sensor, are those on zzp's site as well? and i need bolts for the pullies, that might be a trip to a hardware store or something

Re: phil needs help with a build

Shoulda got the gasket kit from WBS...comes with everything. including harnesses and tune.

Re: phil needs help with a build

LMAO good luck with everything. ill be doing my top swap next weekend hopefully.
