Anyone here familiar with Passports and such or live near the US/Canadian border? Just wondering if it was required to have one crossing from the US into Canada or not.
 


The answer is yes if traveling by air: you need a passport to return to the United States.

The answer is no if crossing borders by land or sea. However, DHS will be requiring passports from US citizens crossing Mexican and Canadian borders by land or sea as of June 1, 2009
 
^^^ did not know that. I ust up and got my passport this past year..... cannot wait for vacation this next year.
 
I'd go ahead and get a traditional passport. They are good for 10 years and you just never know. As for the card unfortunately there have been some hiccups with it mainly in other countries.
 


I drove to Canada in Aug this year. I have a passport, and Sheryl does not, they didnt even ask for her anything but her drivers license, but that could be because I had a passport and my military ID.

I would go ahead and get the traditional passport, as it is more widely accepted and since its good for 10 years, you never know when you may want to travel overseas. I would hate to pay for a card, then find out in a couple of years that I need a traditional passport and now have to pay for that, when I could have gotten it in the begining.

Unless you live in a major metropolitan area that has an office then you can go in person pay an extra fee and have it expidited.
 
I've been to canadia before and didn't cross by air but had the passport anyway just cause it saved time and headache. got through with no problems but this was like back in 2003.
 
Awesome, good to know what to expect. We'll be traveling with two vehicles loaded down with expedition gear so we may just get a passport to try and make things easier.
