Parking brake cables are needing replaced

Hello everyone, I'm new here and hoping for a little help... I have a 2004 Grand Prix and with lack of use of the parking brake, the rear cables have gotten rusty and won't hold while car is on and in drive. I know this only because I live in NY and it failed during inspection. They had me just get it lubed and working to pass the inspection last year. I want to replace them this year & have a few friends that work on cars here. I'm just wondering if this is a basic repair? These guys have changed my calipers, rotors, etc., so they're pretty handy. I just want to know if it's a better idea to buy the parts for $30 and have them do it, or pay $200+ to a garage to get it done? Anyone ever replace their cables themselves to know what kind of job it will be? Thanks for any help offered.

I did mine a few months ago on my 04 also. My tip to you would be to get the cables at the dealership, the aftermarket ones can sometimes be a big pain in the a$$, and the ones I bought at the dealership were not that much more than say somewhere like Autozone, and fit perfectly.

Thank you Joe, great advice. The only place here that even carries them is Napa auto parts so I'm willing to bet the dealership cost for the part will be close to their price... Since Napa tends to be most expensive usually. Will they come with everything needed for the repair or will I need extra parts of any kind?
