Park brake locked wheel

My son bought a 2001 gtp coupe last week. Tonight he was driving and used the park brake (go figure) and it locked the drive side rear wheel. He was close to home, and ended up backing up all the way home (With a friend driving in front of him).

Anyways, any idea what to do to remedy this? I tried the pedal several times and could not seem to disengage it.

Thanks.

The parking brake is actually a separate brake shoe that sits inside the rear brake discs and actuates like a drum brake. You'll have to take the rear wheel, caliper, and rotor off to see what's up in there.

Most likely the cables have rust inside of them. This causes them to hold after you've released the pedal. One trick I've learned for unlocked a brake that is never used is to pull the car backwards a foot or so.

I don't fully understand it, however backing the car up doesn't release it. Driving it forward doesn't either. But pulling it releases it.

I realize that makes a big zero in the intelligent world. I had a car with a locked brake and no motor. So I needed to move the car to work on it. Pulled it maybe a foot backwards with my truck and heard the pop as the brake released. Thought it was interesting and lucky at the time. Few days later the brake on another car did that. I backed the car up, pulled it forward etc and neither worked. On a whim I hooked up the chain. "POP" in under 2 feet, it freed up.

Don't know if it was pure luck, as the mechanics of it don't make sense. It worked though.

Going to look at it tonight. Is it wierd that going in reverse it spins freely, but is locked when going forward?

Got it fixed. Just had to use some WD40 and ingage the brake a 100x or so. Small workout doing that. But is fine now. Did not even need to take the wheel off.
