im not sure if i should drop the trans pan and change the trans filter or not. i have a 99' GTP with 168K on it im the 4th owner and ive only owned it about 5 weeks, the fluid isnt burnt or brown but it also isnt bright pink its more of a redish color. i know to reuse the pan gasket and i know to only put the recommended fluid in im just wondering if itd be a good idea i mean its $50 to do this job so if its not gonna help i dont wanna do it and it goes with out saying if it hurts my trans i dont wanna do it, im just looking for some opinions what do you all think?

are you having any problems with the trans or are you just looking to do maintenance?

if just maintenance, drop the pan and change the filter. especially if the fluid is still red.

if its slipping or something a fluid change wont help in most cases.

When it comes to transmissions...if it aint broke, dont fix it.

Often times, a transmission fluid and filter change on a higher mileage vehicle will cause headaches down the road.

Honest truth, I would leave it. Looks and smells ok, leave it alone.

the trans is holding onto 3rd gear longer then it should, the people before me were neglectful of maintenance its not broken per say but i would like to resolve that issue and extend the life of my trans

I would do a service on it. I wouldn't flush it at this point, I would pan drop it. Change filter and the 7-8 quarts of fluid. If you were looking to help that 3rd gear along, I'd add a bottle of lubeguard or Lucas stop slip.

At 161K miles I did the first service on my Regal trans. Literally it's first service based on the overall neglected maintenance. (air filter had 65K written on it). I'm currently at 192K and while I'm having an occasional issue..at 192...it owes no one a thing.

I wasn't aware you were supposed to change it every 30k. I changed mine at 80k and then didn't change it again till 177k. It had a tcc issue and the pan was leaking horrible so essentially it changed itself between oil changes. I put in a new pan gasket, filter, and shift kit and it acts better now than when i bought it.

im thinking you guys are right im gonna check my fluid a little better (using a white paper towel) and then if its good problaay do a drop change the filter and add some of that trans treatment thanks guys

Whenever someone says their fluid is red etc. I suggest the white towel. You'll be surprised at how dirty it looks vs new fluid. But then..it's in a transmission doing it's job. It's going to get a little dirty. Just like engine oil.

yeah i will before i do it, i was wondering though if the fluid is a little brown is it safe to still add the trans treatment?
