P0716 Diagnostic Code

I drive a 2007 Grand Prix N/A with 120,000 miles and last night my check engine light came on and my car started to shift rough. I tried restarting the car and the light didn't go away but the car did stop shifting so rough. I then ran to an auto store where I borrowed a diagnostic reader and it came up with a code of P0716 (Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Range/Performance) Found this off of a website. "The P0716 code means that the computer has detected a value for the input sensor that's either out of range (way too high or too low), or there's a circuit issue (bad wiring, etc)" After getting the code, the light went off and has been driving fine. Has anyone had this happen to them and what did it entail?

Typically this code will set if the input speed sensor reluctor wheel is damaged and no longer spinning as it should. Since you mention the car is driving ok again this is likely not the problem. I would have the code cleared out of the pcm memory and see if it comes back. This code will turn the check engine light on after two consecutive test cycles while driving have failed. There is another code for electrical problems with this sensor but if the signal dropped out and came back a few times from a poor connection that could also have caused what you have. I rarely see the sensors go bad but have seen plenty of wiring problems cause interemittant connections. There is a larger electrical connector on top of the transmission case you could check and make sure nothing is wrong there and you could also clean it with contact cleaner and blow off the connector ends and see if that helps. I havent seen wire harness problems on the 04+ cars but on the 03 and earlier cars I have seen the wire harness rubbed through under the air box area and cause wires to have breaks or short to something and cause plenty of headaches so you may want to look over this area good also just to make sure it is ok.

Thanks for the quick response! I never reset the code so I will run back to the auto place and get it reset. Thanks for the good info. I will check the wiring and sensor this weekend to make sure everything looks fine. Since the light went off and it has been driving fine lastnight and this morning, I will just keep an eye on it and see if the light comes back on anytime soon. Thanks again!

Mine came on a few months back too. Now Ive been lookin around at tranny places to fix it and they all keep tellin me somthing different. Mine a 2006 n/a but atleast you made it to 120,000 miles I only have 47,000 miles and its doing this. Light comes on then off shifts hard some days doesnt the rest. Any new news on this for ya?

I talked to a family friend who owns an auto shop and he told me since the light went off on it's own, I shouldn't be too worried about it. He just said to keep and eye on it and it most likely was just a weird reading picked up by the sensor and it should be fine. The light has not came on since that one night. I have traveled alot and have put on about 1500 miles in the past 2 weeks without any troubles. So I guess at this point I'm just keeping an eye on it. Has your light came on more then once? What do the auto places tell you?

Yea it first went on and had a lil bit of rough shifting. Then everything seemed ok and I went a good amount of time without any other issues. It has just gradualy been doing it more and more and more. Now I gotta get it fixed as its just doing it to much. So pretty much not trying to get you all worked up but I thought I was out of the woods too. Just kept shifting wierd more and more and the light more and more.

This has also happened to me a few times in the year that I have owned the car-it's an '06 w/ 139k on it now(130k when we bought it)-I clear it,and it usually doesn't come back on for a few months-of course it came on a couple weeks ago, cleared it,now my car won't pass inspection here in NY(evap. system and catalyst not ready)-this is after 2 weeks of driving......

We've only put about 9k on it-previous owner was a salesman I believe. I clear code-sometimes it'll show on my reader but not trip a CEL after a couple days, sometimes it doesn't trip a CEL for a few months-seems to be happening more in this hot summer.Don't recall the cel coming on in the winter.I noticed that when the tranny oil temp gets above 200 degrees, starts shifting rough. It's the wife's car,so it really doesn't have many miles put on it.

*Update* Just wanted to get on here and update you all that it has been almost a month since the light came on and I haven't noticed anything about the shifting. I have done alot of traveling in the past month and have put on about 2200 miles but haven't noticed anything. How many times has the light came on for you guys?

The light has came on about 10 times in the last 5 months or so. More rough shifting tho. It takes awhile for the light to come on. Im gonna clear the code and see what that does even tho it probably wont do much.
