I have a 420 code for my cat. I cleared it several times but now it comes back the same day, and now I can notice the engine fluctuate at any speed when just to say on the pedal. My question is can I clean it? Like take it off and clean it out ? This morning I noticed the exhaust coming out around the front engine bay. Tune up done about 2yrs ago. 08 base 3.8. Thanks gang

sounds like its time for a new cat. if the car feels weak its the cat for sure.

and if the engine makes really loud clanks past 3500 rpm, definitely time for a new cat.
Thanks for the replies. The cat I have now is a walker cat that I changed about 2 years ago. I read on here that a rotten egg will occur but I don't smell it. When I wot it has a hard time getting past 3500 rpm which is not normal. Does the cat actually clog up to the point were no air gets thru, or just stops cleaning the exhaust as it should. Cause honestly I can't buy one now. But I need the wheels. Can I maybe hammer on the ***** and loosen up the crud lol?

Definitely DON'T hammer on it. Running with a clogged cat is not a good thing. The two things that will kill a cat early most frequently are coolant being burned or excess fuel, so when you get it fixed, make sure you check your fuel trims and make sure you're not loosing coolant.
If you're noticing it getting sluggish, it's probably getting clogged. If it gets much worse, I would not recommend driving on it if you don't want to replace your engine, though it usually takes a lot to get that bad. If you're really strapped, see how much just getting a straight pipe welded in would cost. Better than putting backpressure on your engine.

Walker cats have like a Limited Lifetime warranty or a 25,000mile warranty, check to see if you are still covered.
