Overheating?

Hello all

background:
'01 grand prix GT
3.8L engine
~95K miles

My check engine light has been coming on and the code was for a coolant temperature sensor, so i replaced that, wiped the computer so the check engine light wouldn't come back on, but it did.

I'm thinking maybe i need to to flush the coolant/radiator and replace the fluids because i saw some brown gunk around the radiator cap. Or maybe replace the thermostat.

The temp on my engine gets up to 210 pretty quickly and I've been running the vents to try to keep it cool. Then today, the check engine light went off and the temp reached about ~235

What would you guy do in my shoes?
Thanks

my gtp used to get hot like that...replaced the tsat without much help..water pump helped some but it still gets hot when its nice out crusing under 30mph....i think my problem is my fans...they dont spin for chit

Replace your t-stat (which includes flushing and replacing your coolant)

^Regardless of if this fixes your issue, you don't want that dexcool gunking up stuff.

a coolant flush would not be a bad idea, if you have brown gunt on the cap then its prolly about time to swap out the dexcool and change to all makes all model coolant (green).

also it could be that you have air in the cooling system causing the car to run hotter and messing with the sensor.

bleed the air out and see if that help.

well, i figured I'd give you guys an update
It turned out to be a problem with the water pump.
So, i got a flush, new water pump and new tstat and she's runnin cool now
Thanks for the help people!
