Overdrive at 38 MPH

Chadgervais

Former GP Owner
My car is an 04 GT2. I recall reading on the 97-03 buyers guide in the General section, that one thing to look for when GP hunting is premature TQ lock, it did not say why. I assume this means a car that shifts into OD before reaching 42 MPH, pardon my ignorance and correct me if Im wrong, Im not finding a whole lot on google. I assume shift points would be the same given that everything from 97-08 has the 4T65.

I hadn't paid any attention to it until now, but I realized that my transmission is making the shift into overdrive at 38 MPH. I know my speedometer is correct. This is annoying because in my area there are lots of roads with limits of 35-40. I am also concerned about accelerated transmission wear if it is constantly shifting between 3 and 4. I generally leave it in 3 unless I plan on staying above 50 for a while.

Is there anything wrong with this?

Thanks!

So basically, because I'm easy on the pedal it shifts earlier? Or is throttle position not what I think it is?

What do the 160 254 and 255 mean? I know this car cant do 160 mph let alone 254

Please don't confuse tq lockup with a shift into 4th gear. They are two seperate items.

Shift from 3 to 4 should reduce rpm by ~1,000
Torque converter lockup should reduce rpm by ~200-500rpm.

If you keep steady pressure on the throttle and lightly tap the brake (just enough to kick on the brake lights) the tq should unlock. That's the quick easy way to see which it is.
