Over-sized Oil Filter??

Just a quick question, search didn’t come up with anything, does anyone use an over-sized oil filter on their Series II('99) 3.8L non SC? If so what number?

I use a Mobile1- 201 oil filter on my wife’s ’99 Monte 3.1L instead of a 101.
Since the GP 3.8L uses the 101 filter, I was wondering if I could use the 201 filter.

Whatever it is...

ACD stock is PF47
4.3 Vortec V6 for the Blazer's work and they are PF52's.

But be aware if your motor mounts are shot I wouldn't recommend it.

If the filter is too long and you hit a bump too hard, the filter can come down and smash on the suspension parts... and oil drain while engine running = bad

Why you need the bigger filter?Just run 5 quarts of oil, so what if the engine says 4.5, it has no effect on the car.
Since I don't drive more than 10k mi per year I wanted to switch from regular Mobile1 10w-30 to Mobil1 Extended Performance 10w-30. It's "guaranteed" to protect for up to 15k miles between oil changes or one year, whichever comes first. I switched to the Extended Performance 5w-30 in my wife's '99 Monte, current total mileage is 74k, and a Mobile1-201 filter and change the oil + filter once a year. Her total oil consumption at one year=1/2 qt.

I did this to a locals car the other week.. It is just barely big enough to fit in there. I would not recommend it. Just use 5 quarts.

If your motor mount is good, there is PLENTY of room. If it is close to hitting, replace that thing! Adding .5 extra quarts is only going to create more oil for the crank to slap through. Bad idea. Either use a bigger filter given there is room, or add the proper amount of oil.

thats oldschool thinking with over filling the oil causing a problem, i wouldnt go crazy with overfilling but .5qt isnt going to do ****. these arent racekars.

It will, .5 quart is a lot once you get past the max fill line on the dipstick. Besides aerated oil isn't good for lubrication. What benefits do you get from running more oil anyway? No matter how much oil an engine has the OCI remains the same. Even with a bigger oil filter, the extra capacity will provide no extra cooling or lubrication. Sure it's a bigger filter but you're giving it more oil to filter.

Did i ever say it was going to hurt anything? NO... I said it was just going to add more oil to the pan for oil to slap through. I actually do know what i am talking about, sorry I dont have 10,000 posts because I am actually out working on cars instead of sitting on grandprixforums all day. There is absolutely NO benefit to adding an additiona half quart to the engine, its just stupid. :)

Its okay, I have no life. I am armchair mechanic till the day I die.

bro, he works on so many cars, that he's stuck a camera in the oil pan of a 3800 to monitor the level and foamyness of his oil.

hes a serious badass.

you had better back the **** off bro.

i'm tellin' ya!
