Open cone question

I normally run my custom intake which consists of a 3" pvc pipe attatched to a k&n cone. car runs great this way

I was curios about the open cone so i tried it.. zip tied the iat sensor on top of the cone.. Took it for a test drive. It ran fine but when i let off the gas going about 40 the rpms will bounce around slightly.. you dont notice it unless you look at the tach. When i have the pvc intake on it runs smooth all the time so i put it back on.. but im kind of curious why it did this.. Could it be because of the heat?
 


Probably because when you mess with intakes.. it changes how the MAF sensor reads (hz). Therefore, a quick run around the block... would not be a good test. Disconnect battery for like 15 minutes (to reset LTFT's) and then run it for an extended period of time. This will allow the PCM to learn its fuel trims which in turn works with the MAF.

Temperature does affect it... however... I dont think it the reason you feel that.
 
Heat will be a issue. The air needs to come in from a outside source. Not air being heated up by the exhaust crossover pipe right under it.

Even making a box to go around it were it sits would probly help.

Cold air intakes are the best. This is a hot air intake.lol
 


After looking at the photo again, I have this to say: you may want to move your coolant bottle (replace will... 99+ I think) - that's the reason this setup looks funky. Once that's gone, the setup will make much more sense.

What you have now is better than stock. To improve upon your design, move the coolant bottle, buy a 9" cone intake, and point it kinda at your headlight (22.5* bend). OR slap it right on the throttle body (still move the coolant bottle - air comes in from behind the headlight).

Actually, that's the throttle body right on top of the crossover pipe. The air's going to be heated up here no matter what.

Even making a box to go around it were it sits would probly help.
