Oil Smell?

So I am not sure if I will explain this correctly but I feel like my oil (only 2,000 old) smells either like it is burnt or just not good. I know it wont continue to smell like new oil, but on my GTO after a 5,000 mile oil change (9-10 months old), it still smelled like oil. I am also aware that the GXP will burn oil more so than another car due to the DOD, but it just kind of concerns me.

Are there any early signs that my head gasket is going which would make the oil smell? The oil is dark, but not milky as it would be if coolant was in the oil.

At 112,000 miles, I am just concerned and want to make sure I correct any issues as early as possible.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds normal to me.

These newer LS motors and certainly the LS4 run hotter and with the DoD they tend to use and abuse the oil faster.

If you are really concerned about it, change the oil and send a sample to blackstone labs. They will send you a free kit and you send them the oil back and pay 25 bucks to have to do a full report on the oil. They will tell you if it indeed needed to be changed or if the life of the oil was still there.

I've read plenty of stuff about the CalSpeed catch can...probably the route I'm going to take.

Tuning however will take care of kicking off the DoD, which is the main cause for that oil usage...displacement on demand is le dumb.

Awesome man. Thanks!

That's a cool link^ and have you considered adding a catch can

I did in my GTO...may look into it for the GXP now.

Yeah I did have it tuned and had the DOD turned off. Then I sold the tuner so it is back to stock.
