Oil pump check valve

Ok I am feeling pretty dumb right now but I think I may have put the check valve and spring back in wrong. I just had the engine and trans out. needed a new trans and pulled the engine with it because it was going to be down a few weeks while I found a good used trans. Well got it all back together and I have a lot of valve noise like their starving for oil. Can someone remind me how the valve, spring and housing that the filter mounts to go back together. I am guessing I either did it wrong or the valve is stuck. I have read that is possible to get the valve stuck. The oil light is on too so I am sure that means no/low pressure. It looked pretty straight forward how I thought it should go together but it has been a couple weeks and I guess my memory isn't what it used to be. Help me out please. The car fired right up and want to test this thing out but obviously don't want to damage the engine. thanks in advance.

The spring just preloads the valve to maintain a certain oil pressure. I believe the internal gear of the pump rides on the cam lobe of the crank to create oil pressure

Ok well regardless. I put it in wrong. Hope I didn't do any damage. I am going out to swap it around now. Boy do I feel dumb. I knew I should have scribbled a note down on how it was oriented when I took it off. Only took it apart for clearance when I pulled the motor/trans out. I thought I might snap the housing it was pretty tight in there coming out. Thanks for the help I really appreciate it.

Not long a few minutes.

Just got it back together the right way. Oil light immediately went out. Valve train noise quieted down to normal after about 45 seconds to a minute. I let it warm up good. Took it for a short ride and it seems fine. No knocking or anything so I think I dodged a stupidity bullet on this one. Now that I looked at it going together this time spring in first makes sense. I must have been delirious from all the 106 degree temps I have been working on this thing in. Thanks again 2007. I really appreciate the info.
