Guys,

I have to replace the oil pan gasket on my 3.8. Now I read that you have to lift the engine and some $hit like that.

Is this true?
Any experience?

I'm looking forward to do this on Friday...

yes, the motor has to come up unless your houdini. not much, but it needs to seperate from the sub frame far enough to wiggle it out.
 
Use a board/piece of 2x4 to distribute the weight on the oil pan better.
Unbolt the motor mount from the subframe then jack the motor a bit.
Support the motor from above (a 4x4 and chain works well and is low cost)
Now ... hop under and pull out the ratcheting wrenches, it's "this car sucks" time. Swear as much as you want, it's a crappy job because of where the bolts that hold the U shaped mount are located. Once you get that abortion out of the way, it's oil pan time. Keep in mind those bolts are 3/8" and not 10mm, they might round if you try and torque them with a 10mm.
Now it's swear and hate the car again time while you put the U shaped mount back on and then lower the motor back into the subframe.
 
ok my car to needs the oil pan gasket replaced some mechanic gave me a price of 250.00 plus me by the stuff needed is this a fair price
 
For a shop that knows what they are doing, this is probably an hour or two job at the most. Consider their rate and that time.

But to lift the engine sucks...

Bill are you interested in doing one over the winter? I'm only 10 mins away and will probably be looking to get it done over the winter or when spring comes...and I'd much rather give the money to somebody on the forum than a shop
 
wow, just installed new oil pan gasket... what a pain in the ass that was! The hardest part by far, is the top bolt on the right side of the motor... you have all of maybe 1" to get the bolt and your fingers in... :th_angry-censored:
 
I did mine on my old Pontiac grand prix 3 months ago. It took me about 4 hours total. And ut best friend for the bolts on the u shaped cradle is probably ratchet wrenches. They saved me at least an hours worth of swearing. Also for the very top bolt on the u cradle thing its easiest if u get two swivel points for a socket and 6 inch extensions and run the wrench from the bottom back where firewall is. The swivel points make it possible and its a heck of a lot easier that way

Not only is the reach a problem for me, the bracket hole is not lining up to the motor hole. I haven't tightened anything but can't seem to get it perfectly aligned.
 
I had the same problem. And the way I got them aligned up was like I was just a sec ago in last post with the 90° swivel points and extensions. Also for some reason only the bolt that came out of that one hole will go back into it
