oil leak



why bother them, seems like you got a good deal unless its all rusted out. just invest in the repair. its like a hours worth of work, not much to it really.
 
i'll take it to a shop tomorrow,and see how much it costs. i would rather not do it myself, because i haven't got any tools, really.
 


a 30 piece socket set cost like 30 bucks, you own it for ever. you can pretty much do 96% of all repairs with not much more then a screw driver or pliers added to the mix of tools.
 
if you cant tell yet, most of use are all for not paying a shop for a thing. doing your own work saves a lot of money. in this case valve covers are f ing easy, even if your not really comfortable doing it. watch a few vids on you tube before getting your shop quotes, you'l be like ok, i can do this lol

tools are a small investment to make.
 
Yup most of us are all for the DIY... Screw shops and their (most of the time) high labor cost.. You can do this yourself in a matter of minutes.

i think she did the front one, and bailed on the rear. but she did do a trans service, so shes ok in my book. and she works a buffer damn good too.

hahahaha i think i should do it myself then... i do have the time, and technically i am still on a learner's license, which means i am not really allowed to drive without a chaperone... i am 36 years old btw, so that chaperone things sucks big time, especially when you already have (two-wheel) driving experience. so i think i'll order what i need from an online shop and then get to work. i have watched a few vids now, and it seems more time is spent removing accessories than actually removing the valve cover lol
an ebay link showing exactly what i need would be nice... i have searched for "felpro valve cover gaskets" and ended up with gasket sets costing from 12 to 170 dollars...
 
thank you very much! i'll let you guys know how it goes! i just started up the engine, let it rev a bit, and then discovered that the leak is definitely up high somewhere, and that the belt had oil on it, too.
anyway, i hope to get the part before the end of the week, and maybe do it on the weekend.

and yes most of the real work if you can call it that, is removing the parts in the way. all easy stuff tho.

i just had mine off not to long ago. in the back, remove that pull bracket if you cant get to the v/c bolt it 1/2 covers.

when putting them back on, just make em good and snug, if you over tighten them they will break. the bolts have a large shoulder that stops the bolt from going in any further. once it stops thats it. or it will snap. you'll see when you take the bolts off what i mean.
 
so i have now done another check, you know, drove around the block and then peered under the car with a flashlight. it seems there are TWO leaks: the engine one, which is small, and then a second one, which is the one that leaves puddles. the small engine leak is noticeable, but not a huge issue right now, so i poured a liquid into the oil filler that is supposed to rejuvenate gaskets and thus help stop leaks. it was recommended by a guy who knows mechanics, and at 7 bucks a bottle i figured i'll give it a try. i can always change gaskets later, right?

the second leak is on the center line of the car,, and just behind the front axle line. so could it be steering fluid, or transmission fluid? i suppose i could live without power steering, but a tranny would be expensive to fix, i guess.

so in the end i will have no choice but to take it to a shop for a proper diagnosis.
 


you cant live with out power steering, no pump kills the rack and thats no fun to change, and will run you 4 to 500 at a shop alone.


oil additives, damn bad idea. clean your engine, get under it and pin point the leak. or take it to a shop before you have no car to drive any more.

your pissing oil, oil seal craps not gonna stop that.
