oil filter by-pass valve

Madness

New member
With all the talk on here about oil filters, someone told me once that the the GM 3.8 in our cars has a by-pass valve built into the motor. Is this true?

I believe it's in the oil filter adapter. Other GM motors have it too. The oil filter companies realize this and don't include the valve in the filter.

Just an FYI....Ford doesn't have a bypass valve built into the houseing like GM's; the bypass valve is actually built into the bottom of the filter.

Right. Some engines do, some don't. The bypass valve in the filter can be located at the bottom, but the better design is to have it at the top so in a bypass situation, sludge or particle-up at the bottom of the filter doesn't get bypassed. Green part.
