Octane booster

Good or bad ?? just looking for everyones comments and experiences with octane boosters . Which one works best ? What are the bads ? Personally here in the San Francisco bay area we have 87 , 89 and 91 octane so I am thinking of running octane booster to bump it up a little . let me know . thanks guys .
 


As fastkatt said, most don't work. And for that reason, I have never used them. They just don't raise the octane that much compared to filling your car with better gas. Your car should run fine on 92 or 93 octane. And if you are going to go to the track and think you need the extra kick in the pants, then get some race fuel.
 


It takes 10 Octane POINTS to add 1 Octane
I.E. To make 91oct into 93oct, you need 20 Octane POINTS added

yea 92-93 would be great but i only have 91 octane over here in california unless i go to certain gas stations then they have that 100 octane or whatever it is but that crap is tooooooooooo expensive .

You mods on a stock pulley shouldn't be getting too much KR. How much are you seeing?

i havent scanned it yet but i have a friend with a scanner that keeps lagging to let me use it . i plan on going to a 3.5 pulley in about a month or 2 . will told me i should be running a little rich until then but it shouldnt hurt anything .
 
So....if you aren't getting KR, then why would you want to raise the octane? You do know that high octane has the potential to rob horsepower if you don't really need it, right?

I'm just trying to save you $8 a bottle here. Take it for what you want.

that is a good point and like i said in the beginning all the goods and bads are appreciated to help with personal knowledge and to help all other that dont know but like i said all this info is appreciated .
 
i just make my own octane booster.

Xylene is awesome if you know how yo use it :)

Ive done that too. I used to have a recipe for mixing it all together, but it takes quite a bit to raise the octane level, but definitely a good thing if you want to control the process and what number you end up with.
 


So how many points does the Lucas Octane booster add? I'm curious...

I called Lucas and there octane booster adds 30 points, so it turns 93 into 96

I found this today: hy-per lube
It says it adds 5-7 numbers, that's 50-70 points...
That would turn 93 into 100

It has MMT (Methycyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl) in it, no idea if that's good or bad

Anyone that can chime in on this?

MMT is explained here. Basically if the car is not set up for this, you will want to stay away from this.

1. ORGANO-METALLICS

There are three primary octane-boosting additives mixed in with gasoline: organo-metallics, ethers/alcohols and aromatics. Each one has distinct chemical properties and results (along with side-effects) on octane-boosting. Some people get these families of compounds and their effects mixed up.

First, let's look at organo-metallics which is used in the little bottles of over-the-counter octane boosters, what makes them work and how they compare. By far and large, these work on the same principle as TEL-Tetra Ethyl Lead which is the principle octane-boosting component of AvGas. For automotive OTC use, a slightly less carcinogenic MMT compound is used (methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl); it has pretty much the same structure as TEL, but with manganese substituted for lead. These compounds have a non-linear octane-boosting curve. The initial amounts give the most boost and adding more gives decreasing benefits. Typically you get 3-4 'points' increase with these types of additives; going from 91-octane to 91.4 octane max.

As you can imagine from the metallic content, these boosters create nasty deposits in your engine. That's why they typically include a solvent such as mineral spirits to try and dissolve the deposits. Then a lubricant such as ATF or Marvel Mystery Oil is typically added to the cocktail to help your rings slide over the deposits easier and minimize the damage. If you dyno-test a car using organo-metallics (with straight-through exhaust), you can actually collect metallic pellets coming out your tailpipe. Not a good thing to be putting into your combustion chambers no less...
