obd 2 port not working

my friends got a 05 chevy 3500 dump truck, the engine light is on, so we went to get it scanned and it wont power up the scanner, tried 2 different scanners too, checked fuses, didn't find any thing but the cigg lighter was out. swapped that fuse.

any ideas what would make it not work? im at a loss here, never had this problem before.

perhaps the computer itself is bad? i mean if the codes are stored there but can't be accessed it could be a problem with the computer. just guessin here.

it runs ok, it does have a rough idle, that's about it, its only got 35,000 on it too, but then again its always loaded to the balls, and towing a heavy trailer all day, every day.

its running like it needs a tune up, but that's supposed to be 65,000 miles away, but under the conditions it lives under, who knows. poor truck works hard.

Check and see if the lighter fuse is blown again. I have worked on other GM products that share the same fuse for the OBD II port and the lighter. Maybe the new fuse you put in blew again right away due to a short.

the lighter now works, but like you say, it could share a fuse and not have it marked. he gonna have to go back and see if it works or not. if no ill look at the wires as far as i can get to/see, if i cant find anything its off to the shop for him.
