Not Reaching 195

Chadgervais

Former GP Owner
Lately it's been very cold in the mornings. I use a scangauge and let the car idle until the engine reaches 60f. I have a 15 mile rural commute, usually between 45 and 65mph.

I do not turn on the heat until I have 160 under the hood, then I crank the fan full speed and full hot, I get good heat out of it. On my commute, the warmest it gets is 188-191. If the heat is off it will go to 198 and fall to 191 and cycle in that range.

The stat is new last spring and tests good. Does it make sense that the heater core can pull that much heat out of the engine? On long downhills it will fall from 188 to 181 then slowly climb back to near 190.

Thanks

Mine doesnt reach 195 either. Stays in the high 180s or low 190s. I havent ran my heat yet this year.

I was going to try a new T stat since its probably original.

OP I travel 10.2 miles ot work every day and my van temp doesnt reach 180 because i run the heater at full blast (i like a hot car in the winter). you shouldnt worry about it when you run the heater it cools off the coolant a bit more so it wont reach 190. The tstat is doing its job if you were getting temps of 210 or higher then worry about it.

Nate, did mine last spring. The old was stuck part open. In summer heat I only got to 186 unless idling. Now in the summer it runs 198-207 unless idling.

I've had alot of t-stats in 3800's fail stuck open on me, just changed out the one in my 06 recently. Driving around town in the cold was usually fine but the open air on the highway knocks the heat out of the motor in a hurry with stuck open t-stat and throws a low coolant temp CEL

Nate, be sure to grab the gasket too, it's like two bucks. I spent all of 7 dollars at O'Reillys for stat and gasket.

I've read many, many times, on various GM car forums, to only use AC Delco thermostats. Online shipped $11.00.

good lord its a damn thermostat not a fuel pump or a wheel bearing for example where yes quality does play a role in them oreillys work fine and ive used them over and over again before! (ive own'd 6 w bodies) Do a thermostat tis the season best of all they are like a 5 minute job on these cars.

Yup you don't need a ac delco tstat just grab one from the parts store. It's nothing major lol vet said so aftermarket companies are fine. Or continue having the issues until a ac delco one arrives.

I'll just get one and the parts store and toss it in today. Do I need to buy any coolant? In case I need to top it off?

If you drain about 2 quarts out of the radiator you shouldnt loose any. Then just refill when done. Otherwise you will need a little bit of coolant

Also if you put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator your car will heat up faster.
