No 4th gear/ overdrive/ lockup

I have a 2000 gtp and im not getting out of third on the freeway. I am stuck in this gear and it wont go into... an overdrive gear. Before rebuilding the engine the trans was fine. now its not. it got all new fluid and new filter...the works. could we have possibly forgot to hook up something electronically? could it be the spline? there wasnt any shavings before... could it be the torque converter??? Please help if you have heard of this issue or if you have delt with this. thanks!

Who rebuilt the trans?
Were seals replaced?
Did you replace the original 4th clutch hub?
Was the hub worn?
Did you remove the gear selector from the top of the trans and is it properly aligned now?
When you are on the highway does the pcm read that it's in 4th gear even though you aren't in 4th?

Only did what was necessary to clean up the trans... replaced filter, fluid and necessary seals (basic tans kit). We didnt really have to touch the trans because it worked perfectly. No burnt smell, no shavings (from the clutches or gears). I thin its something electrical. My pops rebuilt the engine with me cuz hes a tech. He has to hook up his scanner to it between now and this weekend. Just wondering if its not the 4th gear shaft cuz theres no shavings or smell... must be a shift solenoid or something. What do you think? Thanks Billboost!

Well, I know it's not a shift soleniod because you have 1-3 and both soleniods are used in those three gears.

-Here are the resistance specs on the internal solenoids Connect Pins Solenoid Resistance at 68*F 190*F Shift Solenoid Patterns for each gear
A-E 1-2 Shift Solenoid 19-24 24-31 Range 1-2 Solenoid 2-3 Solenoid
B-E 2-3 Shift Solenoid 19-24 24-31 Park ON ON
T-E TCC/PWM Solenoid 10-12 13-15 Reverse ON ON
C-D EPC Solenoid 3-5 5-6 Neutral ON ON
S-V Input Speed Sensor 893-1127 1132-1428 1st Gear ON ON
M-L TFT Sensor 3164-3867 225-285 2nd Gear OFF ON
Output Speed Sensor 981-1864 3rd Gear OFF OFF
4th Gear ON OFF

See how first has both on and third has both off, that tells you they are working. So you didn't actually open the case of the trans except to change the filter and maybe put a shift kit into the accumulator? You won't get a ton of shavings from a 4th hub clutch if it wears slowly. And if your 4th clutches themselves are shot.. that would also be a possible issue.

Ok. I will copy this and send it to him to look at. What else electronically outside the trans as far as hook up's would be a potential cause? Sorry for being more blunt but I personally only know so much. Pops is the one that would understand better. sorry. How much work is involved in putting in a new 4th? I just find it odd that it worked perfectly fine before the build. Sucks.

Have him scan on the highway for 4th being requested by the pcm. If that's a yes, then it's most likely the shaft or super worn clutches. If I were going in, I'd do both and hope it's not a seal that gave for no reason.

Here's the how to me style.

A buddy I know bought a car, it was delivered working great. He took it around the block and barely limped home because it spewed all the trans fluid from in the coverter area. Somehow the converter itself cracked and yeah.. just bad timing.

woooow damn. bad luck! kinda my ordeal i guess. i will have him check it between now and this weekend. thanks for all the input. i will keep you updated! Thanks again!

Im looking at your pix... all and all its not really a bad problem/ didnt take too long? Did you just go to a local parts store for the shaft?

Are you talking to me? That's some work I did for a couple of guys. I have a local trans supply house that I can buy at. Triple Edge also sells the hubs. I think it's pretty simple..but that's me. Many people try to follow me down the road and find it's not the same for them.

Billboost- I am just wondering if you replaced anything else while replacing this 4th gear hub? I dont think i need to replace the clutches. we have been having a lot of issues with the electrical in this car... thats why i was wondering if it was electrical in the first place. The headlights dont work, the corner turn signals work, not the guage lights and the radio and heat controls dont light up all the time. Trying to figure out that one too. Ha. sucks. Let me know if you replaced anything else though. Thanks for your time.

Well..the 4th hub only on a couple of cars. See you think it's electrical, but in your post you didn't mention all the issues. However the items I suggest do test for what you need to know. Since the soleniods are good, if the pcm is commanding 4th and it doesn't happen....then we likely know that the hub is gone.

You keep asking me a ton of questions, yet you don't answer the ones I pose to you. Kinda tough to help you when you don't answer the questions that would help me determine what you guys did and didn't do. Scroll back up and start answering things if you are looking for input from me. Til you do that.. I don't have enough info to help further.

So far everything i said now is everything we know... its hard for me cuz im not a mechanic. But... as soon as I know more i will let ya know. thanks billboost for the input. it definitely helped us out.

I'm not a mechanic either.

I asked a pretty easy question about did you put in just a shift kit? If you weren't there, please..say so.

Ok....Now in detail, please tell me what was actually done to the transmission.

Was it removed from the vehicle?
Was it cleaned?
Was anything removed from it so that it would be cleaned? Like that black box on top of it?
You said it got a new fillter, that's good.

Billboost- I will get back to you on that question. In the mean time, wanted to tell you that we hooked up the computer and it did read that 4th gear was engaged and working properly. Just doesnt seem to have any type of lockout. Doesnt want to drop rpms down to cruise at 70mph at a normal lower rpm. Must be the torque converter?
