New website, new question...

During the really cold nights we have been having in new york, around a few degrees or below zero, I start my car, and there is a weird noise, like if you were to take a pull back car and pick it up and let the wheels go. Not necessarily a grinding, but not really a screech. I don't know if it's the starter sticking or what. Any ideas?

No other issues. Perfect running condition. My Camry used to make this noise too in the cold. Maybe some silicon lubricant on the plunger may help, but I don't want to use anything that freezes and makes it worse. Funny thing is it didn't do it this morning when it was -8 with the wind. It's not consistent.

Get a load test on your battery. It may not have strong cold start ability. Like said above it could be a starter. Autozone may have a mobile battery load tester that will test the whole starting and charging system

Battery is a year old, and I got the best CCA battery for it that Interstate had to offer. Cost me $150. So I'm guessing the starter gear is the culprit as well. Maybe one day I'll pull the starter and see the end of the gear shined up from catching.

Probably the starter gear then.

However, I worked at Midas and we switched away from Interstate because of the amount of failure. That was many years ago though.

I've been buying refurbished interstate batteries for my vehicles except for this one. Usually got about 3 years out of them. Can't beat it for $40.

Once it hits -10 F around here I plug in the battery heater on my car. I know keeping the battery warm/hot is probably shortening the life span of it, but I'd rather get 2-3 years out of it max than get a couple of months out of it when one or more of the cells freeze solid.

I've also got heaters for basically the entire powertrain, so that might help too.

I thought about just getting a battery wrap. My battery doesn't have a problem maintaining enough CCA to turn it over and start it, but I feel the wrap would reduce the drain and increase lifespan.
