New trunk

Re: Totaled?

I'll be danged. I was wrong about seam sealer also. Theres probably sealer under the hinge or something. Been probably nearly ten years since I fixed a rear crash on one, so shoot me. I'm fading, thats one reason why I don't post much. Had enough snap to go look again though!

Here. I think this will get you closer.

Firmly bump the other end of that 2x4 with a sledge hammer (don't swing it just thump it, sneak up on the correct amount). Less than a 3 lb hammer prolly won't move it but maybe a pry bar or wrench? Hitting it will help it move down, bending with tool won't. Its a funky shaped striker but theres really no adjustment built in so you gotta bump it. I remember now. The rubber overslam bumper is lightly spring-loaded, just push that down.

Hope this helps

Re: Totaled?

That thing was way off and it was the reason it wouldn't open at first. I did the hammer and wood trick before I put the new one on but yours looks even farther than I got mine. But I got it to the point of closing but like you said it is pretty hard.

Also I tried adjusting the bumpers but that didn't seem to do too much.

What were the adjustment bolts that Scotty was talking about??

Re: Totaled?

there should be bolts for the hoop and or the latch on the lid to adjust it. one side has to be able to move some.

and them rubber screw in stoppers at the back that hit the body. those might be hitting to soon.

Re: Totaled?

The Scotty bolts are on the hinges, seen in your pics. Thats the stop for how far the hinge closes, I think. If your lid is not low at the front corners, you should not need to mess with those.

You may just need to fine-tune it now. I don't think theres much if any adjustment of the latch on the lid but you could hog out the holes if need be, to create some. Mine closes so easily you can't even feel it latch. Oh and yeah what I called an overslam bumper, thats a popper-opener instead I reckon.

Anyway, last but not least is to adjust it at the hinge-to-lid bolts. I can't tell good but it looks like you need that. Climb in the trunk, close it. Loosen the lid to hinge bolts. Have assistant even out the side and fore / aft gaps from the outside. Tighten bolts and test. Sometimes that method is quickest. Beats open and shutting it a bazillion times and puzzling over what to move.

Every car is a little different.

They don't provide much if any adjustment of either the latch or striker, its wierd but true. You pretty much bend things to fit. Even grabbing the lid at the corners and twisting the whole thing is sometimes needed.

He can screw the threaded rubber bumpers on the lid in all the way, get it shutting good, then finish up by adjusting those bumpers for proper tension on the latch and ease of operation.

Re: Totaled?

Oh and when you're inside the trunk you can loosen the latch bolts as well as the hinge bolts. So everything can settle into the spot it needs to be in.

Re: Totaled?

thats how i did my hood right after i bought it, cause the hood didnt feel right, one side i could lift and push down, so i got to playing 1/2 turns at a time.

in your pic there idj, the hoop looks to have nuts at the base, surely there must be nuts on the bottom to raise and lower the hoop? looks like theres a handy hole right there too.

Re: Totaled?

The part that looks kinda like a nut but is round, is actually a flared end. Blind rivets come up through the plate from the bottom into those flared areas. Had to go look again, lol. Those are not stud ends but if they were it would give height adjustment.

The rubber bumpers are way more important than a guy might think. Grabbing the decklid and just tweaking it by hand a little is pretty common for that last little bit too. The bodies are damn exact but the bolt on panel skins dont set the same on their shells with every part if you know what I mean. They can be tweak to fit.

That big bolt in the pic is one of the striker assembly attachment bolts. You gotta get under the car to see the other two behind the bumper. They hold the plate that has the riveted hoop. Might be worth a try, loosening all of them and moving it down. I can't remember if those holes are slots or not but with big washers they might be.

Re: Totaled?

Back again!!

I've been super busy lately with school and a new job so I haven't had time to work on the GP.

My dad has been in the hospital since Tuesday because some lady in a Tahoe pulled out in front of him while he was on his motorcycle. He's had 3 different surgeries now so I've been to worried about him to work on this car.

But today is the day. I drove it this morning just for the hell of it and I'm ready to get this thing looking like new again.

Today I'm going to try to get it seated right again and make sure it seals then we'll go from there.

Thanks for all the help and the advice guys

Re: Totaled?

Yeah it's all been good news after the surgeries. He's doing a lot better than they expected so hopefully he can come back home soon

Re: Totaled?

Ouch on dad, hope it all goes well.

As for the trunk.. you are talking with the right guys to get it fixed right up. Another thing I've done and it's probably mentioned, but use car-part.com to find the right color. Being impossible to find blue.. best of luck.

Re: Totaled?

Sorry for the delay guys. Dad had his last surgery yesterday so he should be coming home soon. Pretty sure the bike is totaled.

As for the car, the striker was the problem but it's dam near perfectly aligned now. All I have to do now is get it painted.

I know a guy that knows a guy that does it on the side and supposedly he does good work.

The bumper cover is a little bit pushed down and the tail light is a little pushed in but it's not too bad.

Got a quote for paint on the trunk and spoiler. They said $650 but I know a guy that has a shop so I'll ask him what he can do it for.
