• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

New here with a GTP that won't start... sometimes.

I've got a 2000 GTP. Completely stock, very clean. 60k miles on it. Inherited from my grandfather.

Just joined the forum to research common problems. Every once in a while it refuses to start... fuel pump will prime, just nothing from the starter. I was thinking it could be an ignition switch or a NSS. Like I said just joined to search out common problems so I have a starting point.

Clean all battery connections, grounds etc on the battery, body and starter first.

That's the free thing to do, then past that it could be the ignition switch or something related to that.

Also next time it doesn't start try holding the key in the start position and the tilt lever with the other hand and move the column up and down.

I was helping a friend with a 97 and had an intermittant start issue like this. I checked the starter and battery wiring and all was good. Then tried moving the column and it started. Shortly after he sold it so never figured out what exactly it was.

Yeah done that

Next time it does that try shifting into neutral and starting. If it starts then it's probably the nss.

Tried that, but from my understanding it can still not start in neutral with a bad NSS sometimes. (Depending on how the switch fails?)

Good idea.

So weird, it just started after not starting for 2 days. It was parked in my job's parking lot so I couldn't really do any diagnosing on it. Called a tow truck and it started right before the truck got there... grrr. Hard to diagnose the issue when the issue is gone. I tried jiggling wires around hoping to bring the issue back, no dice. Guess I'll just have to wait till next time it rolls around.

Key turned, nothing. Usually you'll get some indication the starter is trying to work (clicking or lights dimming) but it's just like nobody's home.

It could be a bad spot on the Starter. I had one do this to me before. Starts fine and then all of a sudden nothing. Has full power with everything else, just no start. I took it off and brought it to a friend who rebuilds starters and alternators, he took it apart and sure enough it had a bad spot that whenever it stopped at that point, the next time it wouldn't start.

So I think I figured it out.

It was a combination of issues.

Car wouldn't start again this morning. Heck yeah, could finally take a meter to it and start diagnosing.

No voltage going to starter.....

Checked out the fuse box. Found a bad connection at one of the fuses... fixed it...

Voltage at starter now when turning key, still nothing... had someone hit it with a wrench while I turned the key... bam, started right up. Bad starter.

To diagnose the last bad started I swapped, I had the luxury of hitting the remote start while I was under it , ready to give it a thump. Amazing how some things respond to the "Fonzarelli Touch" ... lol. .... Wait, how old are you??....lol.

next time you find your self with nothing to do or watch, google happy days, its corny looking back, but at the time the fonz was the sh it.

even as a little kid i always wondered why anyone would be scared of old spaghetti arms there.
