Neel's 97's (might turn into project thread later)

Not sure if anyone will care or not, but I wanted a place to start documenting my (well the gf and I's) two 97 GTP's....It all started out pretty normal with my green one, then she wanted one and now all hell is breaking loose....so here goes nothing....

This is my green 97 gtp. I bought it off my Uncle for a grand a couple years ago or so with 197k on it and now it has around 226k After a while I discovered this forum but didnt really do much to the car, I pulled apart a wire while changing plugs so I got some taylor 8mm's and did that hardware store intake and regular maintenance.

As you can see, I had a nice but very small area to work in, in dad's barn....
Well I developed a MAF issue and the valve covers were seeping onto the exhaust so i decided to park the car for a little while and do some work to it....
4.jpg

also fuel line was leaking at the stupid disconnect as you can see, then the line split and I did a ghetto fix for a while some where in there as you can see...
5.jpg

So things started to grow a little from there as they usually do. I figured I might as well put a fresh set of lower gaskets on it as well and replace the coolant elbow and try and clean things up a little better. Wasn't wanting to go too crazy at first because of the miles and what not.

7.jpg

I just thought this pic looked cool. lol
8.jpg

That is when I had to talk myself out of doing rockers too....lol
Then things kind of slowed down for a while again. I was staying at my girlfriends place and then I kinda moved in and wasn't at dad's where the car was. But I at least brought the fuel lines over and messed with them. lol
9.jpg

10.jpg

Then started to clean up the blower some....
12.jpg

I love EGR....
Finally got a garage here bout a month ago around the corner of the gf and I's apartment....
13.jpg

Then I thought ok, I'll also go ahead and do headers now and get the gaskets and clean things up and get the damn thing running again. Then get a 3.4 and tune in the near future.
14.jpg

doing a little test fit...
15.jpg

Then one night about a week and a half ago this happen....
16.jpg

The gf found another 97 GTP....It had been sitting for a while and they guy was only asking a grand for it.....it was complete but missing headlights. I told her, even if we have to put a motor in it or something, we are still going to come out pretty good on it. Plus she liked it alot because it is black and has a sunroof....

Truck was trying to overheat the whole way and a few miles from home the rear tire on the trailer shredded and coming down the ally to the garage I hit something and blew out the front tire on the same side.....awesome luck I have....
17.jpg

But atleast the stupid thing made it....
18.jpg

It also had a ****ed up hood, but I wasnt too concerned with it. But what I was concerned with was the 3.4 pulley and NO OTHER MODS.......I know I was asking for it.....but he said he tuned it and had DHP and he always watches for knock on his cars.......we will address that in a second....
19.jpg

But anyway I patched the hole in the fuel line, rtv'ed the leaky valve cover gaskets for the time being, put in Autolite 606's. (it had Bosch plat's in the back head and autolite 605's in the front head....) put my stock 97 computer in it because I figured who knows what kind of crazy screwed up tune was on it and I took off that damn snout with the 3.4 and put my snout still with stock pulley on it....fired it up, ran like ****, still FLOWED oil out of the front valve cover, smoked like there was no tomorrow, wanted to die and actually did once when you removed the oil fill cap and made god awful noises when reved it.....So i figured the 3.4 had done its damage....and thought about what to do....
I had drove it up the road during all of this once around the block as well and it seemed like it didnt want to shift right either....Girl was feeling pretty down about it but i reminded her that we had room to put some money into it as well....so I decided that I wanted to get hers to run asap and that I wanted to build something different for mine.....so.....
20.jpg

out came the green 97's complete k member.....
21.jpg

good thing her's already has a good sway bar.....
22.jpg

the two meet each other side by side...
23.jpg

damn motor......more like damn previous retard owners.....
24.jpg

black one k member getting ready to come out....

25.jpg

holy ****ed up k member batman....
26.jpg

hmmm left cylinder (number 1) looks like it might have had a little oil going through it....
27.jpg

Now im not an expert here but if you do this mod, you can do any pulley size you want and not have to worry about knock.....
28.jpg

and yes I know i didnt cut it when dropping the k member....
But anyway I forgot to also add, after putting new plugs and my wires on and putting my computer in it, no codes showed up at first, then light started flashing because of number 1 cylinder misfire.....I wonder why....
29.jpg

ohh this explains alot.....lol
30.jpg

this is what happens when you do drugs and mod your 3800 s/c car....
31.jpg

havent even pulled the back head yet, dropping the k member of the black one only happen a few hours ago...
so here is how it sits now...
33.jpg

hopefully tomorrow (well today) I can get all the gaskets I need and put the LIM and up from her motor onto my block and clean get ready to put my k member in her car. Probably going to go ahead and throw my headers on it while im at it and get some new ones for me. I am still tossing around ideas on what to do with mine. I REALLY REALLY want to do a manual swap. Been doing lots of reading on them and hopefully will do a getrag 282/282 swap on a aluminum k member and low mile block and maybe xp cam, hp tuner, ported gen III, headers, etc. and sometime, the 3.4 pulley that came on her car....

very nice..and alittle bad luck but looks like its good to be a cool project...maybe thats why the black one was so cheap......because it has a hole in the piston???

Seller did not disclose that when selling it. Only thing he said was wrong was the fuel line split up by the charger, like mine did....he also said he always watched for knock when he had it, which I find hard because some cut the wire off the knock sensor....

Man good luck. Its cool the gf is into this stuff. I wish mine was supercharged, just don't have the money and don't feel like spending money on premium fuel.

you can run regular in them.....it a horrible idea, but it does work lol just stay with stock pulley and keep it out of boost. lol

Cool projects you guys have there. Looking forward to reading updates. Keep us posted and the pics coming!

I like to take lots of pics so that wont be a problem at all. Hopefully I can get some good work done on it tonight. I can't wait for this one to be on the road so I can get my blazer and s10 together and sold and put some money into my pos green one...

You just made up my mind on what to do for a project car..... Junk gtp im lookin for you.... Awesome so far cant wait to see what you do next.

Looks good. I have a bottom end if your interested i'm not to far from you either.
Feel free to PM me with specs and price on that bottom end. I may be interested in it in the near future.....Still trying to decide the direction I want to go with my green car.....It has to be much better than the girls car. lol

Yea lol If I were you looking for GTP's I would either buy a completely stock one not owned by some retarded kid or one that is really cheap because it needs a motor or something. 3800 motors are everywhere so its not like it cost that much to throw something together, then you have the peace of mind. I hate that nerveracking feeling you have when you buy a "new" used vehicle....That's why im not really that upset about having to throw my setup in her car...because I know the bottom end is good and I know the tranny shifts good....

Well Im looking for something that will be stock and if its running cool if not..... guess thats why they call it a project ;)

Yea that's kinda what I thought, but I guess its the idea of paying "more" at all to some people. People around where I live ***** about it going up like 3 cents. Lol
