Need some suggestions on SUV options

currently the wife is looking for a SUV-type of vehicle to drive around in all weather and in the future put our kids in to get around. the vehicle must be AWD/4WD and priced under $6k. obviously it'll be used/pre-owned with over 100k miles. we thought about the following but need more info and input:
2nd gen Honda pilot
1st gen Pontiac vibe
1st gen 2003 toyota highlander

looked at some of the other suvs on the used market and didn't like the reviews and issues that came with them. some for example, Rav4s the 2.4 eats oil like crazy, the CRVs the A/C system craps out frequently, Subaru legacy's the timing belt replacement is very costly compared to other timing belt replacements on other vehicles.
 


My 05 Nissan pathfinder LE currently has 265k on it although the timing components are a bit expensive
 
I did it myself, I think all said and it was around $1000 but at that time the parts were dealer only. If you were to look at a pathfinder I would look at 08 and up, 05-07 had some issues that I had to deal with (timing chain issue and radiator)
 
You might be able to sneak into the Outback/Forester game but it could be tough in that price range. A smaller shop should be around $500 or less for timing belt. Or buy one that has been cared for and is up to date on maintenance. They are out there.
 
thanks. Im really trying to hunt for a 1st gen awd Pontiac vibe. they're piss slow but for my fiancé that'll do for point A to Point b and they're motor and trans are reliable.
 


I had a Toyota Matrix 07. Same thing. Great car 222K until crashed. You will pay a bit more for the Toyota name but the vibe is just as good.

Any known and frequent issues with them? Like leaking timing cover, eats excessive oil, trans dying, etc

I've had mine for almost 3 years and other than routine maintenance I've only replaced the fuel pump and the knock sensors, both of which were simple to do.
 


im saving up for a 07 or newer hoe/yuk fully loaded slt trim. anything with less then 200,000 on it is a arm and leg, gonna be a easy 10 k for what i want.
 
I would love to have a NNBS but the NBS are a dime a dozen anymore and dirt cheap with cheap replacement parts. I've spent probably $400-$500 on repairs on this thing over the past 3 years.
 
even the 03-06 are over 5 grand here with a sh1t load of miles on em. i owned a 03 already, drive a 05 chevy 3500 all the time, as well as a 2015 3500. i like the newer truck much better.
 
I had a great expierance with a 2004 Explorer Limited with the 4.6 v8 and tow package. If you look for one make sure it has the factory tow pkg as it has the 3:73 gear ratio which makes all the differance in this suv. I put on 80k on it and drove all over the Smoky Mountians towing a 4k trailer with ZERO issues just loved that SUV that when it came to get another I got a new 2015 Explorer which is nice but liked the 04 better . I also had a RX300 lexus that is nice but try to find one with out an oil leak on engine seals.
 


ther dont call them exploders for nothing, got a friend with a 05 thats rotting away in his driveway, trans blew at 70,000 and the timing chains need to be changed, so engine needs to come out.

you might have lucked out, most dont, fords suck, explorer is a real pos in my book.
 
OMG don't get me started on that generation of exploders, every time something broke on my dad's I wanted to beat my head against a wall. His 03 has 135k miles on it but looks like it has 300k.
