Need Some Advice

I haven't been posting much lateley, just been kinda lurkin haha. Anyway, I have been planning to do some stuff with my gp this spring once it warms up. Nothing too fancy yet, just some bolt ons. I would like to do a top swap some time but this is my problem. The car has around 150-160k miles on it, and it's my dd (obviously). I just don't know if you guys think its worth putting money into, or if I should save it for somethin else.

The car runs absolutely fine. It was bought new in 99 and have had it ever since (its a gt btw). I just got the transmission rebuilt last spring so thats working fine right now. I'm just not really sure what to do since it has so many miles, and its just gonna be getting more. Thanks guys.

The engines are stong, as long as your knock free, if you decide to do it make sure you have all proper flow mods and a sexy tune. Since the trans was rebuilt recently, i wouldn't worry much. My gt trans lasted, its still good actually, even after 10k beating miles on my car with mods in sig (besides the new trans of course ;)), im surprized its still in good condition with 135k on it, just has a broken 4th clutch hub (which happens to almost every car pre 03)

If you plan on top swapping it and want to mod it consider

a) your age and aspirations in life
b) if you want other cars that you may be able to afford
c) people really dont want to buy a modded car, esp a gp so consider that if you ever think about sellin
d) youll never break even when it comes to modding then selling

so if you like the car alot and cant really afford a new car go for it. like me, for instance...i have a decently low mileage gp and i really want a car with a standard trans so im not gonna bother doing a sh!t ton of custom work or mods to it so i can sell it later..

go with your gut
oh and p.s. dont worry about modding it and the engine failing, as long as youve taken care of her youll be fine

why wouldnt it be worth putting money into.. What are you plans with the car?

As I said, just some bolt ons, probably mostly exhaust to start with, then later on down the road hopefully a top swap. I would love a turbo haha, but that's not necessary at all. I've seen the top ends of gtp's goin for anywhere from $400 on down.

Yeah, I'm confident it can last for awhile. I just want to hear some reassurance I guess haha.

Yeah, and I can understand about people not wanting to buy a modded car as much. But I really would love to keep this car for a long time. I can't see myself getting rid of it. It's going to last me through college and hopefully further (just a freshman now).

Read my thread if you haven't...it'll give you a bunch of options to consider. IMO...if it is your DD...I'd just put basic bolt ons on it until you can afford another beater...then do a top swap with an Intercooler, headers, and a cam...might as well go all out. But that is just me...I'd do a PLOG, 3" DP, 180* T-Stat, DHP PCM, Autolite 606's and some sort of plug wire...aftermarket or stock, some sort of intake, a Reptile Ported Throttle Body, HV3 Upper Insert...and a GT2 cam or ER Rockers...but its all you afer all...do what you want to do with the money you got.

Haha, I've read that thread like a million times. You sayin you'd go with a 3" DP without being blown? Or are you sayin that you would do that after the topswap? Also, am I gonna have to worry about any kr or anything messin up my engine? I mean as long as I do the necessary supporting mods.

you will be kr free with that setup and yes its ok to run a 3" dp without a blower. there is a minimal lose in backpressure but the hp gains are greater than the loss

i dd my car no problem too, heres my advice though. do headers at the same time as the top swap. then your exhaust mods are basically done. no more worries about restiction.

Well I might as well just go ahead and get some headers in the first place rather than get a plog and dp that I'll just end up selling down the road. It's not gonna hurt anything to run headers on a n/a car I'm pretty sure.

Can someone explain to me why alot of headers say for off road use in the description? I've been looking at pacesetters specifically. Are they catless or something? I'm confused.

Not that I know of. I live in Illinois if that helps. I'd rather not have something happen and get fined though.

Edit: I just googled it and it looks like the only places in Illinois that have to do emission checks are the highly populated areas (chicago, etc.). And I guess there was some law that said if your car was compliant with the emissions testing in 1997 it no longer needs to be tested. Looks like I'm good to go.

I live in jersey and i run catless pace****ters, we have to go through inspection every 2 years. So far so good, as far as the law, it's just a little stinky and i have some black marks above my exhaust tips.

For a top-swap your supporting mod list should be...

-scanner to read knock
-headers
-rocker arms or cam
-nice tune

then you should be able to run a stock pulley near knock free all year round, keep in mind when the temp drops, your car will pull more timing creating more knock, it could be deadly.

If you buy headers now...keep in mind...your car is going to be slower with all the loss in low end...and the GT doesn't have much to begin with. You won't feel anything different until about 3500-4K...then it'll pull harder...but off the line...tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurd.

Thanks for all the advice guys. One more question, can you give me some good places to buy some pacesetters from? I didn't see them on zzp so I wasn't really sure of another place that sold em. I saw em on the W Body Store but other than that I wasn't sure.
