• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Need help with weird idles, and stalls.

I have a 2000 grand prix GTP (series 2 3800 v6 supercharged) It drove fine last thursday, woke up friday started it and it started but idled funny revving from 1000-2000 rpm and would not drive smooth, Found a spot on the exhaust that split open had that fixed, same issue but it would drive a bit then stall out, when idling would rev again. I just replaced the EGR, it runs better the revving is gone for the most part, I drove it to the auto parts store it rode awesome, but when I tried to drive home it wouldn't drive properly,I'd hit the gas and it'd stutter, engine sounded fine everything sounded fine. I let it sit running for about 10 mins and it settled down and started to drive better (it was only 4 blocks). Now when i start it it'll start if i give it gas, it'll come back to 1000 rpms, then start revving for a few seconds than settle back at 1000. It does smell like fuel, and every once and awhile it'll blow some black smoke from the exhaust. (the black smoke used to be every time the gas was pressed now its not that often). I'm not looking to put to much money into the car I got it for $650, The only thing I know about the engine is it had 73k when I bought it a few weeks ago, from what I can tell spark plugs and wires are good. My next replacemet is the fuel regulator but I'm not to entirely sure.

Was having problems with the uploader not working so I added an imgur picture as well, the bigger hose when disconnected does help the engine run a bit better, less revving, I know it needs replaced and the engine needs cleaned for sure.

Thanks guys.

could be a busted vac line, that will make it surge and sound like its got a huge cam.

spray some carb cleaner at the vac lines, if the idle jumps up when sprayed you found the leak area.

I'll attempt to check the vac lines tonight, I'm not the greatest with cars, and know what everything does I can fix most minor problems i just can't diagnose.

if its stalling and doing a 500 rpm surge up and down at idle, its a large leak. like the fat hose off the tb to the evap broke.

if you have advance auto near by they sell the best vac T's you'll find local. small white two in a pack for two bucks.

you just cut three 2 inch long pieces of new rubber vac line, (its a buck a foot) cut the old hard rubber line off th ehard plastic line, then push the new vac line from the t on the hard line, and then the t back to the lim nipple.

i just used all new vac line and tossed the hard lines.

if the fat hos broke, mine did. this is how i fixed that hose.

I appreciate all the info, I'm hoping the rain lightens up and I'll test it tommorow, My friend has a fuel rail and regulator, if the vacuum check doesn't turn out.

Went out to start it up this morning and test the lines, It wouldn't start up, just turns over and tries to start so i couldn't test them. The lines do look like they have been replaced, once i can get it started I'll be able to check for any leaks.
