Need help with temperature stuff on a potential buy

My dad is looking to join the GP family for whatever reason after mine just took a sh*t but after driving the car and it gets hot and turn it off, it wont start again til it cools. Any ideas why? Maybe something with the coolant or thermostat? Thanks!
 


When it gets hot and you try to start it, what happens exactly? Does the starter spin the motor but it just won't fire up, or do you just get a "click" and that's it? How hot is "hot"? Year, model and mileage will also help us. Could be a number of things.
