need help with auto dim/compass.

2002 GTP

Hello everyone,

I have a '02 GTP with the auto dim mirror with onstar/compass/emergency features. Unfortunately the auto dim function doesn't seem to be working and the little built in box where the compass is displayed does NOT power on what-so-ever. Everything else works... I have power to the mirror, the background lights on the buttons light up, when I press the onstar button the onstar automated sys replies and it recognizes my voice, and the led light changes colors (green/red).

I've gone to a few junkyards where I found the exact mirror and replaced it twice and same issue continues. So now I have 3 mirrors and no luck on getting those issues fixed.

So I highly doubt that 3 mirrors would have the exact same issue and now leaning towards the car as the issue. Can anyone help? Or has anyone esle ran into the same issue? Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!!

If the mirrors are made by Donnelly, it is very common for the fluid to leak out of the mirror and the mirror to fail. It is very possible you have 3 bad mirrors.

The compass display gets power from the same pin as the auto-dim, so it does not seem likely that there is a power issue from your vehicle.

Do you actually use the OnStar? If not, you might be better served switching to the 7-pin harness and installing a Gentex mirror. The Gentex mirrors do not have the same issue with the auto-dim failing.

I don't actually use the OnStar, so maybe I'll consider switching to a Gentex one. As far as the fluid leak, it seems good (I used to have a 97 GT which the mirror had leaked out, so I'm familiar with how its looks once leaked) but hey who knows maybe they did leak and someone did a hell of a good job cleaning them... Thanks for the help!!
