need help with a buddys gtp

My buddy has a 98 gtp , it's throwing no check engine lights but the car left us almost stranded yesterday.. When you hit the gas really quickly the car sounds like it's dying makes a horrible groan.. My other friend hooked up his hp tuner and the fuel trims were reading -18 he said it's dumping way too much fuel.. And has no idea why.. The car is bone stock besides a open filter. The front 02 looked dead till you pushed the throttle and it dumped way too much fuel and the other one acted as if we were driving but we were at idle..the thing is though the next day it runs fine until the car has been drove alot and then you can't get over 1500 rpms... Can a fuel pump cause this ? Or bad 02 ? Even though there's no check engine light ?.. Any help would b great as we are stumped and hav no clue where to start to fix this problem..
 


lol thanks.. Yea that's wat we are figuring too.. Gonna cut that ***** off 2morro.. And fix it so it don't throw a code with the tuner..
 
jus can't believe it's not throwin a check engine light.. You would think if it was that clogged it would throw some kind of a code.. But we will see.. Don't thnk it's 02s bc we actually shut them off with the hp tuner and it still wouldn't run right..we turned them back on though... And then today we drove it bout 20 miles and the car ran jus fine and basically had no probs then all of a sudden it started the same crap.. You can rev it passed 1500 rpms if you barely giv it gas.. But if you punch it fast it jus won't go passed 1500... I thought it wasn't gettn any fuel but the tuner shows it's dumpin way too much..
 


Did that fix it?

if not look into the spark plugs, i either fractured 2 while putting them in or they were fractured prior and i never noticed it, but it was sparking enough to not set codes but once it got to running temp it lost power and wouldnt go above 2k rpms.... thought it was the cat but that didnt fix it.

just a thought if it still persists :th_thumbsup-wink:
 
ya I mite check into that .. The dude is still runnin with stock cat on and hasn't cut it iff yet.. We had the backpressure tested and it was 4 psi.. I think it's good if it's at .5 and 1.5.. He's jus takin his time takin the cat off though.. If that don't work we will check plugs..
 
You can always buy a Frozen Boost fake converter...that way it looks like he has a real cat if he is worried about emission issues.
 
where do you get a fake one of those at ?? Hell I mite get one those.. I know he would bc he has to get his inspected bc he lives in MO. I don't hav inspections but sometimes cops checks things out here..
 


You could be sitting at a stop light they can check anything they want if they think you ain't got one.
 
ya that's true.. I need to get a fake one.. It sounded pretty mean the way it was so I can imagine wat it will b like with the new cam and heads... Mite really bring too much attention soon.. BTW we jus changed the plugs and wires tonight.. Got to the last plug and rain and wind jus hammered us.. I eventually went back out with a tarp and put last one in.. Said it ran great for now.. Jus hav to see if it messes up.. If so then he's gettn headers next week and cuttn the cat off.. Either way he's ordering headers pay day nex week..
 


He will b joining soon.. He jus don't hav internet.. He had a stratus RT and I converted him to the gtp now.. He traded the stratus in and paid 1500 and bought the 98 gtp.. Then 2 months later wrecked it.. Sat for a year and jus spent 3100 and fixed it. So he's pretty happy with it now jus hoping the new plugs and wires fixes the prob. But I still think it's the cat.. He says he's gonna go rockers instead of cam.. Hopin to hav his car and mine ready for branson next year.. I'm hopin mines done b4 the tracks close this year.. Jus waitn on the dude to get back from ny and assemble the motor..
 
well the plugs and wires ddnt fix the prob. He can rev it up passed 2500 now but still all jacked up and we pulled into my yard and smelled like sulpher rotten eggs at idle revin it up.. So he needs to yank off that cat asap..
 
it needed to be done last friday lol.. Me and dangtp and evryone on here told him that last friday lol but he's so against it and don't believe it's the prob.. Lol. He's gonna get it done though nex week.. Now gotta talk him into payin 100 to get the credits to tune his car and erace the chck engine light code so it never never comes on again.. Hopefully this works..
