I am a new guy.

I have a 2007 GXP. I love it. I am overseas coming home soon...my GXP is having tranny problems. GM replaced the engine about 8000 miles ago - it is brand new.

I have joined the forum primarily to learn about the tranny and any options that i may have - to fix - replace - rebuild?

Where is the best place on this forum to ask my question about my GXP Transmission?

Did i mention i love my car...i want it running again!

Hi Harry! Welcome aboard.

Alot of GXPs as well as all the other Grand Prix's have issues with the 4t65e Trannies.

Your best option would be to get a built one from Triple Edge Performance. Also LS1Tech is a good place for finding out some exclusive mods for the LS4 guys. But this is the best place appearance and interior modding for GXPs

2007 gxp -

Thanks Drunkie

How much would i expect it to cost + istallation?

I am currently overseas and have to speak this issue through my son.

He tells me that on the way home from a six hour trip the engine light came on - they pulled over and took it to a garage. After the engine cooled off the mechanic told them it was safe to drive the remaining 45 minutes. They did at a reduced speed - but they noticed what they described as a "trans slip". They would put their hand on the consoled shifter and applied pressure forward and it seemed to help. They got home parked it and about a week later the battery was dead. 5 months pass. I asked my son to crank it and see how it ran. He said that once he did had it running, he then put it in gear - it made a terrible noise from the tranny. He decided to turn it off. He checked the trans fluid and it was still gold...and at proper level. Then left the engine run for 20 minutes. Turned it off and tried to restart after 40 minutes and the battery was dead. I had placed a OPTIMA battery ($170) a month before I deployed - it should be strong -It has a brand new alternator.

I will take the car to a mechanic.

I know very little about a transmission - I love cars and besides installing a CAI and a short throw shifter on my Mustang GT...that is my mechanical capability.

I am hoping that you experts can help me prepare to discuss my problem with a mechanic.

1- A friend mentioned that if a battery is dead then it can cause problems with a external transmission "modulator"???. Is this true?

2- What is a reasonable cost of a total rebuild for this transmission?

3- I was told that if a total rebuild is required it might be better to get a different model transmission? I am willing to pay a little more for better performance / reliability. But I want all my electronics to work and the car has paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

4- Should I ask the mechanic what kind of diagnostic equipment he has? Is there a type that is best?

5 - I live in a very rural area...i will use a local mechanic to fix - is this a OK? Or should I try to take to a GM shop - towing bill will be expensive.

6- Thanks for any other information that you think would be of help!

Is the transmission that you recommend have any differnces besides the Factory original?

Gold transmission fluid?

There isn't a single fluid in that car that should be gold.

Don't get a rebuild transmission from just anyone... get one from Triple Edge Performance.

You NEED a built transmission because of how much power that engine makes.

Read in a thread over on OQCGP that the Al engine transfers more heat to the transmission than the 3800 hence the higher failure rate (added power also deals more damage). But it was suggseted to get a fairly beefy tranny cooler from a good company like B&M installed. Post was from guy at Cartuning actually.

$1650 + shipping + core for a TEP + installation.

A TEP tranny will shift much better, retain all features and last longer.

I went on the Triple Edge Performance web site it sounds like i need a high performance website. I like what i see - but it is so far away...do people frieght tranys back and forth - is that expensive? Is it a good idea to have someone not familar with that aftermarket tranny to install it?

That tranny comes with options which are most important...i drive fast - but i dont race...i want a reliable - long lasting tranny

I just called my son - he said the tranny fluid was "new" - i thought he said "Gold" sorry...I am getting old - i guess...i had changed the fluid before i left - i did not know what color it was, but when he said what i thought was Gold i thought that meant new - the idea was to give my family a nice option to drive while i was away - i guess not...new tires - new brakes - new lots of stuff...now the trans goes out.

Triple Edge Performance is in Indiana - i believe - is there a place in ATlanta that builds a High Performance trany??? I don't mind paying for quality if they have a good reputation...the towing to ATL is going to be murder! 70 miles one way...or another option is Columbus GA
