my motor cuts off

I have a 3100 sfi in my 95 pontiac grand prix. When I accelerate quickly to 2.5-3 rpm my motor cuts off when it goes down it runs again. If I accelerate slowly it doesn't have this problem. I also noticed that the temp gauge goes all the way up and the check engine light comes on. My mechanic says I might need to replace the head gasket. I just want to see what everyone else has to say before I do what he says.
