Thanks for the heads up on the valve covers, I'll pickup some OEM gaskets. Or just wait for these to fail as an excuse to get Rockers. I'm considering re-building this car to match the mods my old GTP had to run 12's.

Hey Bill, I'll take a look! I don't know that I want to go cammed on this car. I had one of the first XP Cams in my Riviera, and it ran great, but it just seems a little too aggressive for my new DD.

All of the spares / leftover parts will be posted for sale once the project is done. I'm sure I'll have a TON of stuff to handle.

A little more progress last night. Picked up my buddies flatbed and hauled both cars to the shop, now the real work begins!

Got it, set as a private album.

Looks like I'm going Fel-Pro for my VC gaskets.

Any other feedback on ZZP Gaskets? I ordered up their "Gasket Kit" with everything.

Yeah..it'll all fit slightly effed up.

LIM Gaskets.. I had them side by side with GM gaskets from a dealership. ZZP's didn't quite fit right. GM fit perfect
Timing cover..I think they have that one right.
Make sure you get the grommets with the VC gaskets.
 
I would go with a VS cam > rockers any day. Unless you wanted to go Xp but as you said it's can be a bit aggressive for DD. VS shines in that aspect.
 
And if you forget the grommets you can buy those separate from rockauto. Instead of having to getting a new valve cover set.

Little update here:

I spent about 3 hours wrenching on the car last night. I got the donor car tore down and the only thing left to pull the motor are the Exhaust bolts, TC Bolts, and Bell housing bolts. I'm hoping to pull it out this evening.

One thing I noticed on my new motor is that the LIM Gaskets look brand new! The heads and LIM are dirty / greasy, however the gaskets are CLEAN dry aluminum. I would guess that the previous owner had them changed just before the car was wrecked.

I also got a line on (ANOTHER) 2004 GTP CompG that needs a Trans (Which I happen to have spare) locally for $2000. I may pick that up to flip once I get this thing on the road.

Plenty more where that came from!

Got a couple more hours to wrench last night.

Got everything disconnected from the motor except the 3 bellhousing bolts under the crossover pipe, and a stripped out Manifold to Downpipe bolt. I've got an extractor kit to try on it, if that fails, I'll be cutting it off. I also started stripping the wiring off the L26 that's coming out.

Sawzall the DP and then work on it out of the vehicle....or plasma cut the vehicle..since it's going to be scrapped anyhow..lol

I was hoping to not destroy the downpipe, but I may just chop it and grab some headers. Are the SSAC's still available, What are the other options (That fit correctly)?

Can the engine be dropped in from the top with a set of headers installed, or would I have to put the rear one on after it's in?

One guy here did drop in with the rear header on. It looked like a real pain in the neck as they had to tilt the engine and do all sorts of stuff. I personally lay the rear header piece on the trans and then bolt up as it's coming in. Works great overall.

Another option you could do is to unbolt the rear manifold from the head. Pull the exhaust back slightly at the tips and you should be able to take the motor up and out w/o any issues. Then with it out of the way..get in there and have some room to fight the battle, or use your other manifold and just cut the bolt to get the DP.

All good ideas, I think I'm going to plan on pulling the manifold if I can't get that bolt off.

No new updates today, waiting on a buddy to borrow a cherry picker. I'm leaving Monday for SEMA, so I doubt I'm going to make it back out to the shop this weekend.

Back from SEMA, but slow progress.

Had to grind the nut off the manifold stud, but the motor's out!

I haven't had a chance to look it over too well or clean it up, but I think it has brand new lower intake gaskets. There's NO grime on them like the rest of the motor. I don't think I'll have to swap them out.

I also found out that the trans is a GM rebuild with a 2010 date on it. Might be worth hanging into!
