MY 3.4" Pulley & Supporting Mods

First of all, let me apologize because I know this topic and information is spread all over the place. YES, I did search and read a lot but my issue is more that to get the information I want/need, I'd end up threadjacking and I don't want to do that. So please be patient with me because I'm just trying to be courteous to the other thread OP's.
I'd like my own thread because the questions and info are really going to have to be specific to my own car.

I have a 2000 GTP with 140K miles and she's still in pretty decent shape. Here are the mods so far:

2.5" SS Cat-back exhaust with resonator delete and high-flow mufflers
180* T-Stat
Autolite 605 plugs (1 range colder)
I had a CAI, but took it off because it was causing engine load probs and giving me TCC indecision issues.

I would like to drop to a 3.4" pulley, but I will never go below that. I'm planning on doing a U-bend delete before putting in the smaller pulley.

What supporting mods are absolutely necessary for dropping to a 3.4" pulley? Money is tight and I only have a little bit to play with so I don't want to go all out and go crazy or anything. I'm just shooting for the minimum necessary. I just want to know what mods will need to be done so that putting on a 3.4" pulley won't damage anything. I'm not looking to build a racer, but just something I can spank a ricer with when they get brave enough to try me. :th_winking:

Plog or port the crap out of your stock mannis, al104, U bend delete and a tune for sure. Just my 2 cents.
 
Flow mods! Easy air in, easy air out. There are tons of threads and examples on making your own intake...some prefer open cone, some prefer a fenderwell intake. Then a Plog at the least for the front, and get rid of the ubend. The only way to know if you can safely drop pulley sizes then is to scan the car and see if you have knock. If you do, then you still have things left to do before you can drop pulleys.
 
Here's another question. Has anyone ever put in a 3.4" pulley and then had issues/problems (related to the pulley swap) afterward?
 
Yeah...if you don't have enough mods you'll chip pistons. How does buying a new engine sound to you?

IF you don't have the mods or the money...don't do it...simple as that. You said your on a budget...if you put that 3.4" on it...and beat on it with no mods...you'll be broke as hell with no car.
 
there's two ways to do exhaust:

1. headers (that's all you would need here).

2. PLOG (or ported manifolds), 3" down pipe and a Ubend delete.

Headers are the best way to go. Besides that you'll need, 180F tstat, PCM tune, air intake and colder plugs (PCM, 3.4 pulley and colder plugs are supposed to be installed at the same time).

I'll probably have my manifolds ported locally. this I think it's a good start and I'll hold the PCM and pulley until I can get a KR reading. It's been 6 months since I bought my GTP and I'm getting there.

Just a FYI, a PCM won't do anything to HURT your KR levels...in fact it would probably help them lowering them a bit. Plus, since the 180* T-Stat you have in is pointless until you get a PCM tune...I'd say get the PCM. A tune makes a WORLD of difference.
 
I bought my DP for about 80 bucks I think, plus the shipping to Mexico. I just had it installed yesterday and we also found out that my cat was clogged, the exhaust guy said it still had the factory cat D= I deleted it for now but I'll have to get a new one later on for the emissions thing, anyway it does make a big difference now. I'll take it to the track this weekend to see how it goes.

Next I think I'll get the front mani ported, I think I can get that done very cheap while I get a hold of a PLOG. Might also get a local tune as blue suggests after that, then get a mail in tune when I drop pulley size.
 
I think my cat is bad too (P0420 code keeps tripping). I also have to worry about emissions because of Utah law so going catless isn't an option for me.

Do you all think that the stock transmissions can handle a 3.4" pulley drop okay? Does a PCM and tune help with any tranny issues that could otherwise surface?
 
My stock transmission took countless 1.8 60 foots and down to a 3.1".

A PCM tune cranks up the line pressure when WOT making it shift harder and a shift kit would make the tranny last LONGER IMO, due to the quicker shifting there is less stress on the clutches.

As for the Mexico guy...don't get a local to tune it...unless you've got someone that tunes 3800's...or they'll mess your sh1t up. Try to find someone selling a PCM on here...or if you know someone in Cali...have it shipped there from 3800 Performance. Or if someone on the boards would be nice enough to buy it for you if you paid them :p Do they not ship to Mexico?

They do ship to Mexico and my sister lives in Philadelphia too. I just didn't want to order one tune for my current set up and then another one for when I drop pulleys. The local tune would've been cheaper than ordering one I think.

Who is the local tuner though? Has he done 3800's before? What program does he use?

If your dropping to a 3.4" then you can run the PCM on a stock pulley and it'll be fine...they are programmed for a 3.4" setup though. If you don't plan on modding past that there is no point to skimp there...just get the mail order PCM.

I might be getting headers soon if that happens I'll sell you my DP cheap if you want it.

it's kind of a long story. I've known a guy here for like 10 years who's been building drag racing cars longer than that, so I really trust him. The other day he was building a VW Golf with an M90 taken out of a thunderbird SCed. He said he had a guy comming in to do the PCM tune for that car and that he was good he told me that he wouldn't charge that much, so I was thinking of having a talk with him first and see if he has any idea of what KR is to begin with, that would be a good lead, but atleast I know for sure that he has tunned cars with a M90 LoL.

If that's no good, then I think I'll take your advice and order the 3.4 setup PCM before dropping pulley size.
