mustang gt vs gtp

I have never street raced in the gtp before, so bare with me.

I have been having probs with the trans for about a month now. Turns out it decided it doesnt like 3rd gear anymore so I no longer have it.

Anyways once we got out of traffic, we slowed down to do a 50 roll. There was no honks, it was just punch and go. Mustang got the hit, and instantly put a car on me. As he's shifting gears, I keep pullin him in. At almost 100 the rev limiter kicks in and I realized, O yea I dont have 3rd anymore. At about 100 he had half a car on me.

Im pretty sure if I still had 3rd gear it would have been dead even. But o well I lost. All in all I was very inpressed with the gtp and how well it stayed right with him. I put alot of time in the car and just glad it wasnt all wasted. Now it time to put some more money and time into it and get a new trans.

I just wish I would have been in the TA :(

:th_BSflag-big:

My GTP has the 2.93gears in it and I peak at 80mph in 2nd, so no up to 100 without 3rd unless it skipped 3rd and went directly to 4th at 80 in which case, your even dumber (yes DUMBER) for shifting into 4th at WOT

I feel for the car

shouldnt that flag be red
but yea i agree theres no way it hit 100 in 2nd and if it did shift from 2nd to 4th then that tranny is f'ed

The trans is already ****ed. It has 198000 on it with the stock trans. When Im driving thru town I have no 3rd gear. at 35-40mph the rpm is reading 2800. When it goes to shift into od it does go from 2nd straight to od. Cant do anything about it. Im just gonna drive it until no longer moves.
Maybe I was mistaken about 100. Either way the rev limiter was goin nuts so I let off.

^^^ I planned on it. but cant find a junk yard that has gtp's in it, at least with a decent trans. Im not really all that worried about it right now. I have been driving the TA or the fiancee's jeep so all the gp does is sit anymore

OR...you can just get someone in IL to drop a basic tune in it with the 3.29 transmission settings and toss a better GT transmission in it...and all you'll need to do is swap over your HD Differential from your junk transmission.

So I could just take a gp gt trans and have the pcm retuned for the trans and it would work? I thought they were weaker?

The 3.29s will help performance wise, but you loose some top end (which we have none of anyways). You just HAVE to change out the diff or the additional power will ruin that tranny too. Its not that hard to do tho and just get it tuned and you will be ready to roll out

Bullcrap...I'm pulling the BS flag on you...

since 3rd gear is shorter you are gaining top end sooner since your entering your powerband faster.

I can do highway pulls tons better with 3.29's vs. 2.93's.

I'd only keep 2.93's in a turbo car. 3.29's in a blower car are beyond win.

yes yes that is true. I was thinking more of complete final top end would be a loss because the gearing wouldn't allow you to go the same top speed (which is where I said we have none because who is really going to push 150+ in a GP)... but you would get to where we really top out at faster because of the shorter gears. I was thinking mphs not times

So a GT trans from a 98-02, swap diff and pass side axle, and tune the pcm for the 3.29's. Easy enough, I will pick one up next week then.

If by any chance he COULD find one... would a 03 GTP tranny work?

I thought they came with the 3.29s and the HD diff + the hardened 4th shaft. Would it drop in with new axles and a tune or is it really different? Figured if he can find one that might save time and energy swapping the diffs.

No.

The '03 transmission only worked on '03's...it still had 2.93 gearing and had a hardened 4th shaft from the factory...which is the common no more overdrive issue with the 97-02 cars.

It also has a different valve body/internal solenoids along with the mani plug is pinned different.

Your thinking of a '04-'05 Comp G...brotato.

Tricky has pushed 150+ MPH in a GP. Took forever and a day, but it made it
