Motor Mounts

Classy Pontiac

New member
This is just a random question out of the blue. But anyways, I was looking at the poly motor mounts for the dog bones, the block ones, and getting them, but could someone just make a metal block out of aluminum that fits with a hole drilled through it?

When a valve cover is taken off would I have to replace the gaskets and what is the tightening sequence for a valve cover? The reason I ask is because I am starting to clean my engine bay because it is just insanely dirty.

thanks for all the help.

Ill post a pic later of my dirty a$$ engine bay so you guys can see what I am talking about.

dont know off the top of my head of the valve tq sequence but it might be under the topswap thread or in the how too section.

as for the mounts. if you go with a solid block or twin plates for the frame side of the upper mounts, i would recomment the poly inserts for engine side fo the dog bone. if you go completely solid i feel it would cause more wear on the lower mounts of the engine... i ran a solid upper mount on my DOHC, but it had 3 lower mounts. the same trany mount as the 3800's but had 2 engine mounts on the pass side.... i guess thats why it only had one upper mount.

with that all being said. i think what im doing is using a different upper mount from a chevy van, twisting the rubber insert 90* and then filling the gap with caulk. the arm distance will be off so i will use new arms made from aluminum stock. they will be solid on the engine side and have the rubber on the frame side.

a metal block for a mount would probably make your teeth chatter at idle. go poly

You have Poly mounts?

It isn't any better.

My leg went numb after ten minutes of driving to Iowa with poly upper squares/bushings and a poly lower trans and engine mount. They do nothing for comfort...I'm sure a solid piece of metal would be about the same because there isn't ANY give in my poly's. Ever.

no i dont have poly's, figured they would be at least more comfortable then metal ones lol.

It isn't the GP, granted, but I did go from OE hydraulic-filled rubber mounts on the Camaro to solid polyurethane and didn't notice harsh vibration at all. I did notice a bit more vibration and SOME additional noise, but now I'm not losing much power and torque due to soft mounts. And with the L36 slow-maro that I have, I need all the help I can get...for now. In the GP, I'm sticking with OE mounts to keep it all comfy and reasonably quiet for the family car that it is. The kids love to hear the CAI, HV3 and exhaust when in town and it lulls them to sleep out on the open road. Win-win for me and my wife!

I put the Poly Upper FRONT Engine mounts and Poly upper REAR engine mounts, vibrated like hell... took the REAR one's out and went stock rubber on those and the vibration level is ok now and I get some feedback from engine as well.

You'll just have to do it and decide for yourself what you like best, trial and error.
:)

i had solid lowers and poly uppers (round and square). my car didnt vibrate very much.

so whatever you guys are doing has gotta be wrong.

I still have the stock lower mounts, but intense polys up top. When I first put them on it vibrate like a mother. Now it died down abit but I'm still gonna just go with solid lowers.

Let me clarify... It vibrated like hell while idling and in drive, stopped at a traffic light for example. It's the stock low idle setting causing it I believe (tuned cars don't feel it) and not the whole car vibrating, just enough being transmitted to the steering wheel and floor to be annoying. A slight press on the accelerator cured the vibes... And this phenomenon is noted in Overkills tune as the idle setting is adjusted up a bit to address the vibration at idle. Lol. I thought it was interesting when I read that and laughed a bit, but wth... Lol, it works. Anyways, for me, I just want enough to feel the engine a bit... :)

agreed. anyone feeling the car vibrate while they are cruising did something horribly, horribly wrong. the car should only vibrate when idling, even with the most stiff mounts possible.

he said either way is gonna make the car shake. i thought maybe poly's would be better but was incorrect
and you saying that im incorrect you ment that it wont car wont shake?
it is monday, and im slow everyday but mondays are the worst lols, treat me nicely if im confused on this.

No sweat man, as far as upper mounts go, metal and poly will be about the same on the rattle front, especially up top - almost none.

As I understand it, here are your sources of rattle from poly mounts in order from most rattle to least:

Transmission mount - jarring
Lower engine mount - more vibration
Round upper mounts - slight idle vibration
Square upper mounts - unnoticeable
