Monte Carlo Cross Bars....

crock

Got these off of a monte the other day. They are thicker then the usual grand prix ones. I thought they may be a good upgrade for the $12 I got them for. I also have gmpp strut tower bars but I need to order brackets.

Think it will help anything at all?

Those actually do nothing to brace the chassis...in fact their purpose is to bend when your in a frontal impact...so the hood doesn't come back and decapitate you.

ok well well well i thought they were cool. lol. then why do they make aftermarket ones? Just for looks?

Well they look better then the flat ones, imo. But to each his own. lol

Yeah, a lot will agree with ya. And IMO, it is better to put stock bars on there from a MC than go to the solid billet ones they sell. Like blue said, they are intended to push the hood up and make it buckle in the middle instead of sliding right back through the windshield and cutting your head off in an accident. I would rather my engine bay not look as nice and keep my head.

But I can hear it now.

"Wow that's a terrible accident. The driver of that Grand Prix lost his head. But damn, those are nice engine braces! :th_thumbsup-wink:"

You sure about that Blue?

Since many of the other GM FWD cars don't have them, it's more likely that they are there to steady the radiator support from pulling backwards when you torque the engine. All the other bodies that don't have them, have mounts to the subframe only and not to the radiator support.

Check the specs of the accidents...sure of it. Which is why every frontal GP collision you see...the hood bends right in two.

Not saying they serve more than one purpose, but that is the main aspect of things. Also, other GM FWD body's are different...and have different crumple zones...such as the H and J Bodies...

so zef your saying i should put the stock ones back on instead of keeping those? Will the MC bars still bend the hood?

cause on the back of the bars, theres a part that they are bent. so im assuming its so they will bend as well and then bend the hood. also just ordered my Don Rome brackets!

So because I have the zzp ones my heads gonna get chopped off? I don't think I'm buying it either... Bills reason actually makes sense, and well them being there to fold the hood doesn't. I've seen soooo many Grand Prixs with front end damage down at pullapart and the hoods all folded just fine without any assistance from the diag braces pushing them up. And how is the hood just gonna slide back and cut a head off? Its locked with the latch in the front and out of all the folded hoods and front end wrecks I've seen of these and many other cars I've never seen a hinge shear the pivot pin.

Guys ...I started as an H body owner. We were jealous of the upper motor mounts etc and some engineering folks looked at the bars. To add upper mounts, I'd have to have added some bracing. The mid 90's Caddies had a small angle brace as well.

Then I realized that with my slightly modded front mount that I had less movement than a fully poly'd engine. No thanks..no need for that upper get in the way mounting system.
