Mass Airflow Sensor question

I did not find a previous answer to my question regarding my [1998 Grand Prix GTP 3800 Supercharged] MAF sensor so:
After cleaning my MAF sensor [with MAF cleaner spray] and the screen that precedes it, due to symptoms pointing to its malfunction; the problems still persist. Sometimes it shudders at or returning to idle and has twice now had problems staying started if it has run for 5 minutes or so on an errand and been restarted. NOTE: The free code check at Autozone was supposedly not specific enough to reveal all, though I have now looked up the specific codes for the MAF given in the forum's GM OBDII chart.

Questions:
1. Is there a reliable test that I can do myself that will insure that I must buy another before throwing the $ in the wind?
2. Anyone know where the best price can be had if I do have to buy one?

Thanks,
Dean10e

1) Unplug the sensor drive around if the problems go away then its the sensor.
2) junk yards could be an option.

Thanks much for the simple test. I have considered doing just that, but with the hassle it's been so far, I didn't want to risk making things worse without some bad influences to encourage that.

Am I to presume that unplugging it would isolate it from interfering with start and idle issues, but running without it would greatly reduce mileage?

Maybe. The pcm will go back to the VE table by default when the maf's unplugged. I dont you would see a huge differance. Id get a maf asap if you find its the issue
