masive oil leak

2000 GTP i bought it with a oil leak being told it might be a oil pan gasket, i cleaned it all off put oil dye in it and the back side of the block and a little round sensor between the trans and motor is saturated with oil. I know its not valve covers, hoping not the rear main seal. i have an appt. on friday to have it looked at. will post later.
 


How do you know its not the valve covers? Im assuming you see no dye coming from there? The valve covers are a VERY common point of failure that causes oil leaks. If you got oil all over that 'round thing' which I believe is the knock sensor then the oil has to be coming from a point higher than that and the only thing I can think of would be the valve cover gaskets. I suppose it could be the heads leaking but Im certain you would have other issues if that were the case.

Its most likely not the rear main seal. These are transversley mounted engines, so the rear main seal is on the drivers side, front main seal on the passenger side.

Working this out a little more, if you are certain its not the valve covers, then it could be a line leaking back there. The power steering lines run back along there. You also have the oil pressure sensor that could be a point of failure but that is more on the passenger side and lower on the engine.
 
Yea Scott, just spent extensive time cleaning and re cleaning, looks brand new under there, had my wife run the engine around 2k and there it was oil pan.
someone at some point had it off, why who's knows, im guessing they didn't use a new gasket with all that silicone under there, it is leaking right by the flywheel but the dye/oil is coming between the silicone and the pan.
So with new gasket in hand off to the shop on Friday.

PS: the valve cover gaskets where replaced a couple months ago.
 
It looks like a pan with a orange silicone ring around the edge.
hope that description helps.Its not a typical style gasket I've ever seen.
 
my dad had that same problem with his 02 GP, took it to the dealership 3 times before they finally fixed it rite, $3,000 worth of work on the bill... in the end it had something to do with the valve covers, u could even smell the oil.
 


OK the tranny is out and the plate that holds the rear main seal along with the rear main seal was leaking. Pulled it off and oil and coolant came out,it almost looks like the other side of the motor like where a water pump would go -weird-
Right now i have the oil pan off the plate off and all cleaned up for reassembly
Tomorrow, should i replace the gm coolant for regular stuff? i will also now install my 180 zzp thermostat.
Oh did notice the rear spark plug wires had oil on them hope the rear valve cover gasket isn't leaking too. why so many leaks?

That would be your rear engine cover leaking or the rear main seal. Never heard of a rear engine cover leaking, but have seen a few rear mains leak before. It happens, but not often.

While your under there and suspect the oil pan gasket leaking, for sure now would be the time to do it. The oil pan gasket when reinstalled goes in wet, meaning the mating surfaces are both dry and cleaned well, and then on either side of the gasket, you apply RTV gasket maker. I personally only use the Permatex "Ultra Gray" RTV on all my builds and service.

If your spark plug wires are dirty with oil, then that for sure is a valve cover gasket. It is leaking but usually just seeping more likely. Something you for sure want to take care of regardless, Oil leaks suck.
